How I did it: i bought a mandolin on ebay and started palying it. It was easy for me because I knew other instruments. Its got theexact same fingering as a violin. . .

Intro to playing the mandolin

I have been playing the mandolin on and off since August 2004. I have a great teacher, but have had sporadic lessons. I realize that I will only see progress if I have regular lessons, like I do with violin (see my entry for violin), which will make me want to practise more often, etc. Why did I decide to pick up the mandolin? I heard REM’s Losing My Religion for the umpteenth time on the radio, and thought “I love that sound”. So I decided I wanted to play it. Since then I have found I especially enjoy playing old English, Scottish and Irish folk songs, and Brazilian music on the mandolin. I would like to learn from Django Reinhardt tunes too.
