Project of the Month (POM) this month is “my” orphanage Torez (for the disabled) in Ukraine.
We are trying to raise 1,200 dollars for the bedridden children.
http://www.life2orphans.com/ Click on “Project of the Month” under the subheading “Needs and Projects” to read all about it. The POM runs for the next 7 days!!
These children are really suffering in body, mind and spirit and so desperately need help.
Photos (but be warned, they are disturbing, so don´t look unless you are ready for that)

We are raising money this month for the Bedridden Children at Torez Orphanage in the Ukraine- to provide them with stimulating activities, extra food and physical therapy.
Not long after I had joined the
L2O group last year, I was sitting browsing through the photos one night. I came across the photos from Torez and was very interested to take a look as I had donated to the Bedridden Children project and also to the Feed a Baby for a month project with Torez in mind.
The photos from the Nurses trip last year sent me reeling. I was shocked out of my warm cocoon of reality and even having some idea of what orphanage conditions were like, nothing could have prepared me for the sight of the hollow eyes, twisted legs and feet, thin bodies, empty gazes and the lack of hope. Apart form the happy smiles that the games from the nurses bought out, I was filled with such sadness and pain. I howled and howled as I looked at the photos. It upset my children to hear me cry, so I retreated to my room to cry into a pillow.
All sounds very dramatic, but I haven´t been able to stop thinking of those children since. I felt privileged to be able to send three sponsorship boxes to Torez late last year to three non bedridden children, and so happy to have my first bedridden child to sponsor now. I am also honoured to be the Coordinator for this orphanage and it is a role I hope to grow into with time and make a real difference to these children´s lives.

...in Torez, Ukraine.
Our current project is to find a “food sponsor” for each of the 47 bedridden children * There are 47 bedridden children at Torez laying in bed as you read this.
- These children suffer from a wide range of conditions: Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Arthrygryposis, Spina Bifida, and so on.
- The children have a range of physical and mental capabilities.
- What they all share is a common fate of institutionalization, with 525,960 minutes to spend a year in bed doing nothing.
- They are in desperate need of food. Children that do not get enough calories weaken over time and simply wither away.
OBJECTIVE:
- Get these bedridden children mobile and using the physical therapy room.
- Increase their strength and basic health with a higher calorie diet.
- Provide every child a chance to live their life with some basic dignity.
SOLUTION:
- High calorie food program (in conjunction with physical therapy)
- Each sponsor will be matched with a child and we ask that the family commit to sponsoring their child for at least a year.
- You can save a child’s life.
Please consider sponsoring a child for $30 a month.(You can also sponsor a child jointly).
If you are interested in sponsoring a child http://www.life2orphans.org/help_online_donations.htm or contact Stacie at babcockslm@comcast.net for more information.
NOTES:
- Consider that if you eat 3,500 calories more than your body needs, you will put on about 1 pound.
- If an orphan receives an extra 3,500 calories a month, they will gain 12 extra pounds over the year
If you want more information you can also contact me (Renia) through my 43 things page and I can chat to you about it and also provide you with much more information.
If you don’t want to send money you can also sign up for a “box and letters” sponsorship where you would send things to your sponsored child twice a year.
