I met Hero yesterday in the Union Square dog run, and he IS awesome. Crazy puppy energy, slightly underweight, gorgeous ebony color. He is currently being fostered, and seems none the worse for wear despite his trauma. Loves his Kong. Loves zooming, listened to commands. Maybe not a good dog for a toddler-heavy family, as he is still jumping a lot..but it’s happiness, not hostility. He was along in the dog run, and he only seemed curious (never aggressive) when another dog passed. And his name is Hero, and here is why:
From his Bio:
When his owner was attacked, Hero protected her with his life and took 9 deep knife cuts to his face, head and neck. By the time the police arrived, the assailants were gone and Hero laid bleeding from his wounds. The police took this gentle one and half year old American Staffie to an emergency room where he received hundreds of stitches. The owner never showed up to claim him. If he were a soldier, he would have received the purple heart but instead he was taken to a kill shelter where he received a great temperament test. But the shelter was full and Hero was about to find himself on the Euthanasia List for lack of space. Rescuers stepped in and Hero was shuffled around until SFTH heard about this wonderful boy.
The foster dad says that Hero is totally housebroken. He does not chew on anything but his bones and is a complete gentleman in the apt. He loves frolicking in the park and plays wonderfully with his canine friends.
