I just found out that there is a nice waterfall outside the town of Yelapa, Mexico where we are planning to spend a week in feb. 08. It sounds like people mostly just hike to it, but hopefully you can swim in it too. I’ll be with my husband and two girls who are 3 and 5, so i should probably consider myself lucky if we even manage to hike to it, depending on the difficulty of the hike for the kiddos. We shall see!

Well, I went in a waterfall, which was technically what I wanted to do. This was nuts though… no peaceful swimming.
We did a journey behind the waterfall. Now, I must tell you that this is no Niagara Falls “Journey Behind the Falls” where there is no access to water and only tunnels that look out to the running water. This was truly us journeying THROUGH the waterfall. I was super scared because of what I had heard… that it wouldn’t be legal at home, that you can’t breathe and that they wouldn’t do it again. Although scared, I had to do it to say that I did.
We got the guide who took us down to this gate that he unlocked and then we started climbing up rocks and muddy hills. As we got closer to the rocks it definitely got harder to breath. You had to breathe through your mouth very carefully and at times I couldn’t see anything. At times we’d find rocks to take some shelter behind and catch our breath. We walked in a line, one behind the other. When we finally made it under the falls, leaned against the rock, and looked up, it was unbelievable. You could see the falls falling over but it was hard to look up due to the mist. Wow. Was so glad I did it.
We then head back and came to a point where we could jump off the rocks into a fairly deep area. I went off the little one and then was one of 3 people to jump off the high one. Huge rush. SOOOO glad that I did it.
Apparently it was “very dangerous” and stupid of me. :-) Totally worth it!
And I swam in it. It was pretty much the coolest thing ever.
I have pictures on Flickr… I’ll try to come back and add the link.
But this sounds like fun and who knows, maybe I’ll get better one day?
