    12. 'VESSEL IN VAIN' By SMOG  — 1 month ago

I cant be held responsible for the things I say
For I am just a vessel in vain
And I cant be held responsible for the thing I see
For I am just a vessel in vain

No boat out on no ocean
No name there on no hull
And its not a strain at all to remember
    Those that Ive left behind
Theyre all standing right here beside me now
And most of them with a smile

My ideals have got me on the run
    Towards my connection with everyone
My ideals have got me on the run
    Its my connection with everyone

    Such free reign
    For a vessel in vain

Are we not all vessels in vain?
    Such a beautiful song.
I feel quite close it this tune.
We arrived with nothing and as sure as hell we’ll leave with nothing!
I was a late listener to Smog but I love all their work.
I first heard this song in the british movie ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’.
Rarely do you see a movie where you feel so involved in it, that it touches your heart.
I urge everyone to watch it, and I dare anyone not to have their jaws hitting the floor at the end of it.
One of the greatest British movies of all time, by a fantastic director Shane Meadows, and with
in my opinion, the best British actor of the time Paddy Considine. No exaggeration!
Go watch it! And enjoy the song!

5 - 'Ten Dead Dogs' by Wild Sweet Orange  — 1 month ago

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=fWOQqwEhRhI

I saw ten dead dogs on the side of the road
Driving late last night to your apartment
And I thought it was an omen
So I headed on back home and
Walked in circles ‘round my room
    Alone

And Oh my god, is this really what you want?
Would you tell us if it’s not?
And could you rewrite the plot
    And come and get us?
    Yeah, come and get us

Shivering cold, I woke up in water
And wrapped myself around the toilet seat
I spoke in tongues and took all my clothes off
    The tops of my fingers
Touched the tops of my toes

And Oh my god, is this really what you want?
Would you tell us if it’s not?
And could you rewrite the plot
    And come and get us?
    Cause we can’t stop doing
    What we think we want
Even though we know it’s not
This place is merely a subplot
    To come and get us

I’ve never felt this way before
Am I running away from what
    I’ve always been running towards
Belief, believe in me, cause I don’t know
If reason’s ever gonna see why love
    Would come to die
    To leave

Oh my God, is this really what you want?
Would you tell us if it’s not?
And could you rewrite the plot
    And come and get us?
    Cause we can’t stop doing
    What we think we want
Even though we know it’s not
This place is merely a subplot
    To come and get us

I watched the sky turn from blue
To black to red and yellow too
Before the purple dawn was filling up my room
    And for a brief moment
I heard the whole earth groaning
    Like there was something
That it needed me to do

    • My new career, my new job, my new life… the life that I worked toward for 6 years… is depressing the hell out of me. I like to think about the different facets of one’s life as the subplots – work, family, friends, lovers, and foes. So maybe this is a little dramatic… but it fits. This damn song just fits.

    11. 'I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART' By Wilco  — 2 months ago

I am an American aquarium drinker
    I assassin down the avenue
I’m hiding out in the big city blinking
What was I thinking when I let go of you

Let’s forget about the tongue-tied lightning
Let’s undress just like cross-eyed strangers
This is not a joke so please stop smiling
What was I thinking when I said it didn’t hurt

I want to glide through those brown eyes dreaming
Take you from the inside, baby hold on tight
You were so right when you said I’ve been drinking
What was I thinking when we said good night

I want to hold you in the Bible-black predawn
You’re quite a quiet, domino, bury me now
Take off your band-aid ‘cause I don’t believe in touchdowns
What was I thinking when we said hello

I always thought that if I held you tightly
You’d always love me like you did back then
Then I fell asleep in the city kept blinking
What was I thinking when I let you back in

I am trying to break your heart
I am trying to break your heart
But still I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t easy
I am trying to break your heart

    Disposable Dixie cup drinker
    I assassin down the avenue
I’ve been hiding out in the big city blinking

What was I thinking when I let go of you
    (Loves you)
I’m the man who loves you

Well, I could spend all night guessing what this song is about, but here’smy slant on it.
I think its about someone who he let go, someone who he doesn’t care about the same way anymore. He wished he could capture that first feeling of their relationship again, instead of running all the past experiences in his head. And he’s finally admitting to be the less-secure member of a long-term relationship.
the girl he talks about is much more capable of tearing his heart out and he knows it.
To me this song expresses the difficulties we all face in our relationships, and how hard it is o communicate without saying or doing the wrong thing.
And that’s why I like iot so much. It’s very relevent to me at the moment. The lyrics. Regret, revenge, pain, hurt and loss. I think he knows he can’t go back now, don’t look over your shoulder at the past but look to the future.

‘What was I thinking when I let you go?’
Unfortunately for me, the girl that I let go, is the one girl I want and need back in my life and I would do anything for that to happen. I don’t and can’t move on, and know me and her were meant to be and so I’m going back to fight for her. I am trying to mend her heart.

    10. 'IT'S ALL OVER NOW, BABY BLUE' By Bob Dylan.  — 3 months ago

You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last.
But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast.
Yonder stands your orphan with his gun,
Crying like a fire in the sun.
Look out the saints are comin’ through
And it’s all over now, Baby Blue.

The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense.
Take what you have gathered from coincidence.
The empty-handed painter from your streets
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets.
This sky, too, is folding under you
And it’s all over now, Baby Blue.

All your seasick sailors, they are rowing home.
All your reindeer armies, are all going home.
The lover who just walked out your door
Has taken all his blankets from the floor.
The carpet, too, is moving under you
And it’s all over now, Baby Blue.

Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you.
Forget the dead you’ve left, they will not follow you.
The vagabond who’s rapping at your door
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore.

Strike another match, go start anew
And it’s all over now, Baby Blue.

Dylan is one of the finest wordsmiths in music history and it’ll be a sad day, the day he goes, but I think this is one of my favourite of his songs. It seems to me to be about change, but I don’t think it’s to do with a relationship as such, but just moving on in general in life. Progress. Movement. At this time, Dylan had just moved from acoustic to an electric sound, and many fans called for his head due to this betrayal, but Dylan stuck to his guns because he knew the sound of the future. We all should take a leaf out of his book and not be afraid of change, nor upsetting people who discourage change. Movement is vital, and if we do not move, we are dead!

    9. 'PITSELEH' By Elliott Smith  — 3 months ago

    I’ll tell you why I don’t
Want to know where you are
I got a joke I been dying to tell you
A silent kid is looking down the barrel
To make the noise that I kept so quiet
I kept it from you, Pitseleh

I’m not what’s missing from your life now
I could never be the puzzle pieces
They say that God makes problems
Just to see what you can stand
Before you do as the devil pleases
And give up the thing you love

    But no one deserves it

The first time I saw you
I knew it would never last
I’m not half what I wish I was
    I’m so angry, I don’t think it’ll ever pass

And I was bad news for you, just because
I never meant to hurt you.

I think Elliott Smith is probably my favourite singer/songwriter of all time. I can’t for the life of me understand why the whole world isn’t in love with his songs. His death makes all his songs that little bit more tragic, but I think this is one of his finest. It’s a song about love and loss, and you can feel the despair. About loving a girl and losing her, only to feel lost and angry, but also it seems that he never really felt worthy to be with her and always down on himself. It so sad that he can’t stay friends with his lost love because the pain would be too great. It shreads and mends at the same time, it’s truely a heartbreaking piece of work.
’’They say that God makes problems, just to see what we can stand.’‘
I think Pitseleh means ‘little flower’, I’m not sure though.
R.I.P Elliott, thanks for this remarkable song.

    8. 'A MINOR INCIDENT' by Badly Drawn Boy  — 3 months ago

    There’s nothing I could say
To make you try to feel ok
    And nothing you could do
To stop me feeling the way I do
And if the chance should happen
That I never see you again
Just remember that I’ll always love you

    I’d be a better person
On the other side I’m sure
You’d find a way to help yourself
    And find another door
    To shrug off minor incidents
And make us both feel proud
I just wish I could be there
    To see you through

    You always were the one
To make us stand out in a crowd
Though every once upon a while
Your head was in the clouds

There’s nothing you could never do
    To ever let me down
And remember that I’ll always love you

Although I have seen the film About A Boy, I can’t really remember where this fits in but nevertheless it’s a great song off a super soundtrack.
I love how simple it is. The music isn’t exactly a Phil Spector wall off sound, just a guitar, a harmonica, and a the voice of Damon Gough, but it’s the lyrics which are so sincere, so meaningful and touching. You know when he sings it that he means every single word!

4 - 'Reading in Bed' by Emily Haines  — 3 months ago

    Who’s in a bad mood?
    Who’s in a taxi?
    Turning the clock back,
Avoiding a fight with this man
He is meeting, stands in the lobby
Counting his questions in the neon light

    Sinking under the river
Sewer line touches the edge of the suburbs
    Back to the beach where
    A family is waiting
    On rumors of summer
Lay out a blanket, bring something to feed the birds

With all the luck you’ve had, why are your songs so sad?
Sing from a book you’re reading in bed and took to heart.
All your lives unled, reading in bed…

I would bet anything that she’s amazing live, but I missed her when she was in Toronto… here’s a video of the live performance in Edmonton.

File under “heartbreaker”. Being lucky or successful does not equal being happy… I know that all too well. Escapism is a wonderful release; there is a pile of books eternally next to my bed.

I really need to start posting more under the “eases my heart” portion of this goal…

3 - 'Mouths to Feed' by The Epochs  — 3 months ago

I’m not even going to try to type all these lyrics out, just listen instead – you won’t regret it. – mp3 link

The part that breaks my heart?

And I did not fight it,
    And it did not hurt….

Edit: Yeah, that mp3 link didn’t so much work. I fixed it :)

    7. 'ABACUS' By Fionn Regan.  — 3 months ago

    The grass is screaming long
    Midnight cars roll past
    I’ve been chasing your room
    While the summer lasts

So count it on your fingers
    If we got it wrong
It’s cause the days have no numbers
    If we leave tonight
And we leave it all behind

    Drinking alphabetically
Cause the beauty’s gone all sore
    Honey dripping, paler skin
While there’s bodies underneath, the floor

So count it on your fingers
    If we got it wrong
It’s cause the days have no numbers
    If we leave tonight
And we leave it all behind

I simply think this is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. The fingerpicking work on the guitar is to perfection and the lyrics are amazing and cery poetic. Fionn is a talent not to be ignored that’s for sure. Fans of Dylan and Nick Drake will love him.
I couldn’t find him playing but I found this fella playing it and it’s very good:

2 - 'These Tears Ain't Mine' by Roma di Luna  — 4 months ago

    (Link to an mp3 clip)

Nothing worse than sleeping on bad words
You’re so out of touch, why so blue?
‘Cos you make me happy most of the time
These tears that I cry, baby
    They ain’t even mine
Days that I wake up ready to lose
Selfish and torn up with nothing to give
But you should know you’re the love of my life
These tears that I cry baby
    They ain’t even mine
    They ain’t even mine

I’ll sing you a song all day and all night
I’ll write you a love letter, tell you you’re alright
‘Cos you make me happy most of the time
These tears that I cry baby
    They ain’t even mine

    I say I’m sorry,I said I was wrong
I’ll beg your forgiveness in a thousand songs
So you will know you’re the love of my life
These tears that I cry baby
    They ain’t even mine

You just have to listen to it. Her voice is so unique, and the way she sings is so honest. (The guy on the guitar is her husband.) Maybe this is girly, but I want someone to love me this way someday…
