My dad passed away on Thursday. Of course I am experiencing quite a few feelings including some I can’t yet name. On a positive note, instead of isolating and withholding information like I usually do, I’ve made efforts to reach out to other people at this time.

Connect with people was my original goal. But, I want more than occasional connections. I want the type of community Marv Thomas talks about on http://www.personalvillage.com.

When I started running ten months ago, I had a few modest goals attached. I wanted to lose a gazillion pounds, find a boyfriend who ran, and maybe make a few new friends.
Today was a tough day. I completed the See Jane Run Half Marathon. There were few mile markers, no visible starting or finish line, and after mile 9 I had no idea how I was going to finish.
Yet, my family was there to support me, the part of my family that I only became reacquainted with four months ago, and the members of my running club where there to cheer me on.
Sure finishing an unpleasant race (that I wanted to quit) is an accomplishment. But, most pleasing was that I had people there supporting me.

I went my first “sista saturdays” event a couple of days ago.
According to the yahoo group,
Sista Saturdays is an ongoing gathering for women in the Bay Area to reflect, replenish, and reconnect building sisterhood as a foundation for healthy families & communities, and learning to put spiritual principles to work in practical ways. Twirling about in our usual circles, we rarely get a chance to really connect with a diverse array of strangers. This is a space opened up every few months for us to get outside of our comfort zones and build sisterhoods in a sacred borderland~
Our theme for the night was home. We each brought a few artifacts and food or drink item that reminded us of home and had discussions about our items and what home means to us.
I brought brownie bites, a picture of me with my younger brothers, bubble bath, and a book that has helped me become a bit more at home in my own skin.
As an introvert, this was a good opportunity for me to practice talking to strangers in a pretty open and authentic way. I enjoyed myself and look forward to going back in a couple of months.
