DocD is having a rainy day.
I assume that by “regular”, you mean making yourself present at a certain place often enough, be it every night, once a week, or whenever your in town, so that people recognize you and know your name when you come in. To me, “regular” immediately brings to mind a bar, as in the old TV series, Cheers. In which case, I would consider myself a regular at Mother’s in Shimokitazawa in Tokyo even though I haven’t been there for 6 months. I used to live a block away, and you could find me there every night for years. If I were to walk in now, Chi-san, the owner, would give me a big hug, sit me in my normal spot, and we’d catch up on all that has happened in our lives during my absense. Of course, there would be a lot of old regulars there that I know, and we’d be buying one-another drinks and talking for hours. It would be like coming home. Another place that I consider myself a regular would be Piano Bar (The only name I ever knew it by, though it probably has another)in Kichijoji, Tokyo, where Red Shirt (The only name I ever knew him by) would immediately make me a Harvey Wallbanger and a shot of JD for free, then ask what I’d like to hear him play on the piano. (He’s a damn good piano player). We’d talk about this and that between his sets. There would be other regulars there that I’d recognize, and he’d introduce me to anyone I didn’t. Another favorite where I’m a regular is Brau Haus in United Square in Singapore. The owner, Mike, might be surprised to see me, because I’m more of a seasonal regular, mostly winter and summer. He’d sit with me at a table and order a pitcher of Tiger beer for us to share as we gab about family and friends and life. Roy might be playing guitar on stage. Jasmine might be waiting tables. Mike’s nephew, Andy is probably working in the kitchen where his cousin Gary is cooking. Then his brother, Rick, would probably show up. (Actually, I’d most likely arrive with Rick since I’d be staying at his house.) There would be a lot of faces I’d recognize, and we’d say “Hi” all shake hands and maybe play some pool. Just writing about this is bringing tears to my eyes. I want to go “home” and laugh with my friends.

What I really wanted was to find a place that is ‘mine’. A place that I found on my own, not crashing in on someone’s hangout. I realised that last night when I was trying to decide where to go today. One place was somewhere one of my cousins took me. Another place was a friend’s hangout. And so on. Then I decided to hell with it, I’ll go to the market in the city, and realised that I started going there on my own, and noone else I know hangs out there.
So I’m counting this as done!

I used to belong to a small book discussion group and we’d meet in a cafe, the owner got to know us and would let us sit around talking as long as we liked. Then it changed hands and when the staff thought we’d been there long enough they’d start vaccuming around our table and stuff like that – never mind the fact that we would all order several coffees (with cake!) during our meetings, it wasn’t as if we were just cluttering up the place and making a coffee last three hours. So we found another cafe where the owner was happy to have us, and shortly after the owner sold up and the group disbanded. I’d love to be a regular somewhere again – hmm, where to go?

I became a regular at a local sports bar, I have decided it is not worth it…to many temptations.

You are shopping at the drugstore and the girl behind the Pharmacy counter calls out by first Name, to let you know that your Rx refill you called in a few days ago is ready. ?!?
You can check out stuff from the library without your card and they look up the number on the computer without even asking you first or last name.
You can sit down and do your banking at the business window cause the lady that works it, calls you over and chats with you & the manger waves HI when he sees me
I’m a bit of a “Dork-About-Town”
They may not be the bar in Cheers but I don’t think I want to grow up and be a barfly.

Every time I went to the new Mexican place in my hometown, I ordered the same thing. Now they know my name, and I don’t even have to order. :)

Embem knows exactly what she wants.
I go there, all the time.
In the past month, I’ve been there at least 10 times.
I usually go on Wednesdays and some other day of the week.
I order generally the same thing, my favorite thing, but I mix it up…
I just want to walk in there and have Adrianne be like “Hey Em, The usual?”
