I am currently teaching at a university 2 years ago

But, my goal is to get a tenure-track position. I LOVE, love, love teaching, but these days, universities function like businesses. Not that that is necessarily bad, but it sometimes makes the university like a factory, constantly trying to produce output. Oftentimes too many students are put into one class. For instance, the capacity for a logic class is 55 students, with no TAs and no labs. This is not favorable for anyone involved. Students don’t get the attention they need, on an individual basis. And the professor has a difficult time maintaining the progress of all the students.

I currently work for a primarily-student-run department in my school where we (I’m also a student) support and troubleshoot computers. I, in particular, lead development projects for creating tools for internal (and some external) use, to make troubleshooting and managing things much easier. For instance, I developed a framework called Canvas to help build web applications, which in turn was used to develop a file distribution system for having a repository of helpful files such as drivers, AntiVirus installers, et cetera.

I enjoy my work, especially the learning and leading that I get to do. I even turned down a higher-paying job in the department next door (less job satisfaction, ultimately).

All in all, a great opportunity for a lowly student like myself! :)

I used to work in a computer lab in university, and then I was a teaching assistant. Then I got to teach a graduate level class in Information Systems, which was pretty cool.

I work for an university as programmer and its great.

The dynamics in an education environment is drastically different than those in the corporate world. My whole “chain of command” are highly educated. Big boss has his PhD and the one person I work with also.

This makes for a very stimulating and open working environment. No internal politics, just “what’s our goal, how do we get there”.

It will be a sad day when I have to leave here. But leave I must.

I worked at University of Kent, Canterbury for a few years, doing administrative systems analysis/programming. It was a nice job, and I quite liked being situated on the University campus with access to the library, college facilities and plenty of nature in the surounding woods and walks.
