It's sooo cool! 2 days ago

The fact that this is not very expensive and there are locations everywhere! This seems like fun in a geeky way!

I've had a GPS for years 2 weeks ago

but really haven’t used it very much. I’ve been thinking for a while about trying geocaching out with my daughter but haven’t ever gotten around to it. Earlier today I went over & met heavee for a couple of hours and noticed that he has a book on geocaching in his bookcase. I mentioned it and he said that he’s gone out several times. We’re going to try to get together some Saturday when the weather is decent and try to find some caches. Getting started with someone who knows what they’re doing should be easier, and a motivation to actually get out!

No luck 3 weeks ago

Tried this for the first time over the weekend. There are several caches hidden within walking distance of my home but I couldn’t find them… However I think I know where they are. Had to fine tune the GPS settings. I’ll try again tomorrow.

Buy a GPS (handheld – the one in your car probably won’t work:) and go to geocaching.com and it will help you get started. Geocaches are like a national treasure hunt, and you’d be surprised how many of these containers are hidden all around the places of your daily lives. Some are hidden only a few feet off the shoulder of a store or back street. Some will require bushwhacking off nature trails. Some are even submerged in lakes if you like to dive. Their rating of difficulty and decodable clues are on the site. Punch in the coordinates and get going. Be sure to bring a spare pen for log books and some trinkets if you’d like to trade them for something you find. Definitely a worthwhile activity perfect for the weekends.

I've never done this before.... 3 months ago

but I did first hear about it a few years back. I planned on doing it then but then I never did. lol I’ve found this site though that has A LOT of this stuff going on where I live so I’ve got plenty places to go. No excuses!! I still don’t know what this is all about but hunting for a “treasure chest” seems like fun. Just follow the X.

I got a GPS navigator last year. Now all I have to do is look on the geocaching website for some coordinates and seek those caches!

Geocaching Rocks 5 months ago

I really like to do this. My dad introduced me to it and now I am a member on www.geocaching.com The last time I got to go I got lost and ended up having quite an adventure and almost scaling a rock face! On my way back down the mountain I found the trail that I was supposed to take to get to the cache but it was to late to make a second attempt. I vow to go back and find that cache. I still do this with my dad every time I go visit him. Attached is a picture of me lost but still thinking I was on my way to hidden treasure.

Night cache 13 months ago

I did my first nighttime caching – the initial starting point was a trailhead specified by the GPS coordinates on the tick sheet. Because I wasn’t sure how long the route would be, nor was I keen on carrying a flashlight in hand, I used the helmet-mounted bike light, its battery tucked into my rain jacket pocket. The route was marked with a white trail tack every few hundred feet. “Trail tacks” are little reflective thumbtacks that you’d completely miss during the daytime, but stand out moderately well with a flashlight aimed in the general direction. (I guess they’re primarily used by hunters?) Even in the rain, they worked well.

There were several turns onto other trails. The off-trail portion was marked by an additional orange trail tack. After ambling down and into the bush for another 20-ish feet, we spotted the pair of orange “eyes” marking the final, a camouflaged ammo box.

Like Chris, I will need to check myself into Geocacher’s Anonymous.
