Actually, it’s been years since I’ve done this, but I didn’t even know this could be a goal for someone… Anyway, is this worth it? Hell yeah! I think TV is absolute rubbish from A to Z, including – believe it or not – the Discovery/National Geographic channels. In the final months, I think about the only thing that I was still watching was VH1…
For me at least, The Internet, with all its flaws, has become a much more useful source of news, information and entertainment, mostly due to its interactivity: you can choose your sources and the content you receive at any second.

We Can Do This
Let’s quit watching television. Is it that easy. The answer most of the time is simply no. Why? Because we don’t live alone in this planet. We are surrounded by people everywhere and watching television is as common as eating three meals a day. Why the comparison with the meal? Nutritionists today don’t advice three meals idea instead five smaller meals with less time within each other, but if you check around you most of the people still eat three big meals a day and probably your family does too, now let’s say you are aware that the five smaller meals are healthier and you want to follow this diet. So you say to yourself “I’m gonna eat five meals a day from now on”, so yo go to your family and spread the idea and not all of them react good to it lets say one of them says “Oh so no we have to cook two times more because you just feel like it” etc. etc. You know how this is going to end. You are going two keep eating three meals a day probably for the rest of your existence. Now you know you want to quit television because you know its unproductive and a waist of your time, but you are human and humans are not made to live alone in this world, you have to have things in common with people to be accepted, attract friendships, through friendships relationships and live a healthy life. Now television is one of the most popular things in this planet, almost every middle class and above human being has a television set and uses it several hours a day. So it’s very common to have a television show that you like in common wit that really good looking girl or guy, if you’re a woman, that you want to meet. You can say television has many roles even the one of cupid. So you want to take this pretty huge thing that almost everyone has in common and say: “no i don’t want to watch television anymore” and then you begin to have a huge difference with pretty much everyone around you and probably including your family. So when people you used to have things in common before because of television see you are not the same person anymore they will probably just stop calling o talking to you. I mean really what else could they talk about. People who watch sports, football games no longer have things in common with you, yeah you can read it in the paper but its not like you saw the touch down in the bar with them and drinking beer, all of a sudden you are pretty much alone on your decision and you decide to quit. Here is what i want all of us to do. There’s a phrase i like a lot, awkwardly it comes from a movie, the very recent movie Batman: The Dark Knight. It goes like this: “The darkest hour is just before the dawn” People are not just going to notice how you have changed in the way the don’t have televisions shows in common with you anymore. They are going to notice your productivity too. You start achieving believe me. They are going to notice over time and will want to be like you. Inspire people, you will have to suffer a little but after a while a bunch of people , probably the friends you should really keep around you or your real friends are gonna join you on this goal. You can do this. We can do this. Good Luck.

blimey, can’t believe it’s a whole year on since i tried and failed at this but then there’s been summer and another season of big brother to keep me hooked…yet here i am again realising that i hate watching tv. i just do it because it’s there and because i can but i’ve been doing a heap of research (to strengthen my resolve) and i’m gonna do it this time…i even have my husband on side (except for the occasional weekend international sport ) and some movies as rewards.

I want to QUIT TV because I find that alot of my time is sucked up watching TV shows which actually do not add any value to my life. I mostly get drawn to the detective serials, movies, and alot of times I find myself glued to the TV even after what I had intended to watch had ended. It reduces the productivity of my days and distracts me from the work I should be doing. Therefore, I want to QUIT TV: I declare it entirely unnecessary and that TV should no longer be part of my vocabulary or life. Unless I find a good reason for watching TV, I will work towards removing it from my life. I will only watch dvds/vcds of movies, serials and documentaries I really enjoy.
The immediate plan is to watch only those shows I truly enjoy, and switch the tv off after these shows have ended. And then I will work from there.

This has truthfully done more to enrich the rest of my life than anything else I can imagine. When I happen to be at others’ homes now, whose TV blares constantly, I’m able to see it for what it is.

but I got about 3 days worth of stuff done today, without it. Ooccasionally, I’ll still rent DVD’s of old shows and watch them on my laptop but TV isn’t going to be the focal point of my home life any longer.
The only new show out now that I’ll really miss is The 4400. But this season will be out DVD next year, right? :(

It’s hard after you give up tv because people want to talk about random shows that you haven’t seen for a long time or shows that just started and you have no idea what thier talking about. Sometimes I miss the white noise of tv in the background as well. But I’m going on 3 years.

i’ve been really surprised at how easy it is to find other ‘things” to do other than turn on the tv. the hard part has been not actually turning it on. i realised that i was addicted to complete and utter useless rubbish. i haven’t quit completely and can’t see myself going cold turkey any time soon but i’m keeping this as a “thing” to do because i reckon that if life is better without as much of it…then life might be much better without it at all. I’ve been listening to more music which has led to more conversation with my husband..and i’ve been doing better on some of my other ‘things’ which i now can devote more time and attention to.
