Begin Planning My Boss's 60th Birthday Celebration

went great, with several people even driving about 3 hours from various places out of town. Though he’s having trouble with this “landmark” birthday, I hope we helped soften the blow, and that he could feel how much we all love him.

is the big day, and we are all ready. I need to make my food items, and that’s about it. We had a bit of a scare today when it became apparent that his buddy who was supposed to be keeping him occupied while we were getting everything set up had not yet confirmed, but I put a bug in his assistant’s ear, and she got it handled, so we’re good to go now. :)

and I were going to go in on an electronic photo frame for him, until she found out that she was actually going to be expected to contribute financially to the beverages, party supplies, etc. with the rest of us. :) So it’s just me getting it for him now. But I appreciate her coming up with the idea; I had nothing.

I tried for half an hour after supper tonight to get online to search for one, and as is often the case here at home, couldn’t get a connection. So, in a fit of frustration after a stressful work day, I just hopped in my car and picked one up locally.

Last weekend I also found the perfect birthday card for him. :)

Now all that remains is wrapping the gift, picking up a couple of items for the party, and cooking a couple of hors d’oevres. I think we’ve had 17 of his friends confirm for the surprise party so far; I think it will be great! We all love him to death, so I hope he will be pleased.

is set, invitations are out, but I have no ideas for a gift. Damn.

we set the date – June 9, the day before his birthday. And discussed menu, guest list, etc. a bit more. I hope this goes well; Boss Man is the best!

And I also came across an article this weekend about a local attorney we’re familiar with – and how she is also a vintner! Her labels have cute legal names like “Ms. D’Meanor White” and “Sweet Justice”, and I need to pick him up a couple of bottles for some gifting occasion, too.

my co-worker SingleN brought in a project she’s been working on at home for this event to show us – she’s putting together a kind of “the world as it was in 1949” book.

I was thinking about also putting together a picture collage – we have some older photos of him at firm pool parties, etc. from back in the day here in a firm photo album.

at lunch, I discovered two of my co-workers have also been thinking about & working on this – one of them had even roughed out an invitation. The other brought up the valid point I hadn’t considered about our guest list needing to consist of just business associates so we’re not stepping on the family’s toes.

I hope we can put together a celebration that he loves, and that honors him the way he deserves.

in a client meeting there was an idea I might steal. The client said that for her husband’s 64th birthday they compiled a list of “64 Things I Love About Steve”, which was read out loud at the party. Her example was “He always made sure to buy the very best lawn equipment – for _(the wife)” since she was the one who did all the yard work!

My boss is a wonderful guy, with a great sense of humor, and I think he’d love this. Between his many friends, his family and his business/Rotary Club contacts it shouldn’t be too hard to come up with 60 things.

the big day is still over a year away, I want to begin putting down ideas now so that as I hear about or think of an idea, it won’t be lost when it’s time to put things into motion. I can’t say enough good things about the man; he’s not only a great boss and truly outstanding attorney, but also a person that I just totally respect and admire.

Scrapbook Someone at a recent party was talking about having friends and family each prepare, or at least give an idea for, a scrapbook page, which would be assembled into a book and given to the birthday person. Though this might be more of a female-oriented deal, I think he might appreciate it.

Video Presentation A related project I’ve seen for wedding receptions, graduations, etc. is a slide show of still photos through the years (sometimes with added video footage) set to appropriate music that the honoree would like. I’m sure we could raid his i-Pod.

An orthodontist at last night’s party was also celebrating his birthday that night, and before work that morning, his staff brought breakfast to him. A cool idea for this guy, who lives alone, but probably not practical for my boss.
