Teach the Under-Caffeinated how to Make Coffee

When all the water is through the coffee grounds, the machine will become quiet. The glass pitcher should now be full of dark brown coffee.

To serve the coffee, pour it into a coffee cup or a mug with a handle. Don’t fill it all the way to the top, though. Many coffee drinkers need room to add a bit of cream or milk or sugar and stir without spilling.

Scoop four or five tablespoons of ground coffee into the filter. Some people like their coffee very strong, and use up to ten tablespoons per pot of coffee. You’ll need to experiment to arrive at your perfect cup of coffee.

Now the pot of coffee is ready to brew. Turn the coffee maker “on”. The cold water will drip into the basket of coffee grounds, flow through the filter, and into the coffee maker. Not to worry – there is a heating element to warm the coffee.

It will take 5 or 10 minutes for all of the water to drip through the coffee in the filter.

Next, remove the plastic cup above the glass pot. This holds the coffee filter. If the cup is already full of used coffee grounds, dump them in the trash, along with the old filter.

Rinse out the cup. Wash with soap and water if mold appears to be growing in the old coffee grounds.

Separate a new filter from the stack of filters. They have a tendency to stick together. Place a new, dry filter into the plastic cup, also known as a basket.

The glass coffee pitcher is often called a carafe. Fill the carafe with tap water. (Some people use bottled or filtered water, which greatly improves the flavor of your coffee.) Sometimes there is a little door covering the water reservoir – lift it. Pour the whole pot of water into the reservoir area in the back of the coffee maker.

Note: This amount of water will produce a full pot of coffee. Advanced learners may request directions for a lesser amount of product.

It is not necessary to add more than one carafe-full of water to the reservoir. You don’t want to make more coffee than the carafe can hold.

Hardly anyone (other than me) washes their coffee pot with soap between uses. Most people just rinse it out. If you are unfamiliar with this term, please refer to rinse out before you proceed.

You will need a coffee maker, water, a coffee filter, and ground coffee beans. Whole beans will not work. They have to be crushed up – commonly known as “ground”. Hence the term “ground coffee” as opposed to “whole bean coffee”. Do NOT use “instant” coffee for this process.
