What I did is pick a song, one that I really liked and I looked up the tabs and no matter how hard it was, I practiced for hours and days until I could play it. How I did it: I learned progressively. Slowly playing genres that get harder and harder as you progress. I started out playing emo music. Now I play straight-up death metal (the music i listen to anyway). Learn songs from bands, learn excercises, practice them, and you will be great. You can hire a teacher if you want. i taught myself.
