I’ve managed to become practically fluent in Afrikaans. I’m an Aussie and learnt it because my husband is an Afrikaner and he and his whole family speak the language (they are very fluent English speakers too). I have to say that it’s not a very useful language unless you know Afrikaners because it’s not spoken in many places in the world… even in South Africa you don’t really need it… and it can be very difficult to get good resources outside of South Africa but still, learning any language is a worthwhile pursuit!
