Your feet have to do one thing, and each hand has to do different things…..but one day it all just works out and you become able to synchronise…...and away you go.
I taught myself by reading up on the internet and talking to someone from a local spinning group. 21 months ago

...to make room for other priorities.
I do hope to learn this skill someday. It seems a fine complement to knitting, as well as meditative and creative. 2 years ago

I have a white American fuzzy lop mix rabbit. I’ve been collecting her hair for the last few weeks while she sheds her winter coat, and I would love to learn how to make yarn from it. Then I’d make a beanie hat or blanket or something out of it, so a piece of her could be with me forever. 3 years ago

There is a spinning class at the local weaver’s guild in two weeks. It runs about $60, which is a little steep for me right now. Is it worth it? 3 years ago

I’m working on my first yarn on a drop spindle, but am already craving a wheel of my own. I love it! 3 years ago

So very much worth it. Beginner’s kits with drop spindles and roving are not very expensive. I now have two drop spindles and a homemade kick spindle. I haven’t yet completely finished a full skein but I am in love with spinning. I will own a wheel someday I’m sure. 4 years ago

By all reports, spinning is at least as satisfying and meditative as knitting.
After working with words all day, I find that I crave a balancing activity that isn’t about words. Knitting has been one such activity that I’ve enjoyed. Although it’s been a while since I’ve knitted with any regularity, I expect to return to it at some point when I have more spare time – and a comfortable chair to spend it in.
For now, I’ll keep spinning on my 43T list to remind me that I want to resume working with my hands as and when I can. 4 years ago

I’ve been knitting since I was 5 years old and have made everything from socks to afghans, sweaters, mittens and hats. I’ve wanted to spin for years but I didn’t realize all I needed was a simple drop spindle. I thought I needed a spinning wheel and they’re too expensive! Tonight I’ve ordered a beginners kit with instructions, drop spindle and 8 oz of roving. I’m excited. 4 years ago

Are there internet sites that have video of how to do this? Any books you would recommend? 4 years ago
Answer
Got myself a drop spindle a couple of months back, and though I’m getting much better at spinning single plying still perplexes me and makes me want to cry when ever I try. This week I aim to master the basics of it, or at least not get all grumpy and give up when the going gets touch. 4 years ago

I started spinning about a year ago, and I’m completely addicted. I’ve got a couple drop spindles and two wheels now, and I’m still in highschool! It’s frustrating at first, but eventually you get the hang of it. Just stick with it! 4 years ago

Well, I’m starting to get better with drafting, but I have a lot of trouble joining pieces of roving. I haven’t tried setting the twist, yet, either. 5 years ago

This seems like it would be very relaxing. I just bought some beginner equipment from Etsy.com. It doesn’t have to be expensive if you’re willing to shop around. 5 years ago

Well, my textiles professor was thrilled with the merino roving I gave her. She rubbed her face in it and squealed and hopped around and I think the class left that day a little more convinced of her insanity. 5 years ago

Lots of fun! It takes a lot of time, but it’s so much cheaper than buying yarn at yarn stores, and you get to control the color, texture, everything… makes knitting more of an “art,” I think. I started on a spinning wheel, I found drop spindles were more portable but too tedious if you want to finish a big project. 6 years ago

They’ve got spindles and wheels and looms and all this cool stuff. It’s so awesome. I’ve got my little drop spindle, and my big ol’ wad of wool, and ten minutes later I’ve got. . . something that doesn’t remotely resemble yarn. Crap. 6 years ago
