Last week I got lunch at Ling Ling. They gave me two fortune cookies with my sesame chicken – so I faced a choice: open both of them or give one away. I chose the later and dropped the second cookie on Ashley’s desk. My fortune was this:
We write our own destinies
We become what we do
Currently looking for a job and finishing up my degree, this felt very potent. I only need to look into myself to determine the kind of work I want to do. I taped it below my other inspirational quote – as a kind of book end to my days of fortunes told.

I’ve always had this idea of pasting them to poster board or something and framing it…like a giant fortune cookie spreadsheet.

Now I’ve got all these fortune cookie messages taped up inside my desk. It was sometime back at Michigan State, I must have just eaten some Chinese food and I believe the fortune said “Discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or a nation.” I taped it up and haven’t stopped. It’s been at least 3 years now and I’ve got about 3 dozen different fortunes. A few are legitimately funny, a few are brief and cheerful, and some others really don’t make any sense, “You will make many changes before setting satisfactory.”
In any case I’ve gotta do something with these. Any suggestions are welcome.
