Will be travelling this summer, so won’t be making any payments, so despite all the payments I have made I will almost be back to where I was a year ago (out of $3000, $2000 is just yearly interest! What is the point? I am most likely going to have to support my parents in their retirement, save for my own retirement, pay a mortgage, and I would like to be able to help my children with their tertiary education. I could go on and on about the gender wage gap etc etc… Our government has been so short sighted when it comes to education)! I have to keep reminding myself not to think about it – there is no point wasting energy on this frustration. I have my education, the government can fine me but it can’t actually chase me down and throw me in jail for not making repayments, and the debt is cancelled if I die before repaying it. And I really want to travel this summer.

yay GBPs! 2 years ago

At last I can make the minimum payments from overseas, thanks to the exchange rate between NZ$ and £:) It’s not going to get paid off fast as saving for a house deposit is smarter since if I move back to NZ the loan will be interest free. But at least I can fairly easily make the minimum payments and knock a bit off it (or at least keep up with the revolting interest).

Didn’t make any of the exhorbitant payments I was meant to last year, since I was busy paying off my credit card. Will have to apply for a lower repayment rate, it’s just impossible. If I was back home now I wouldn’t be charged any interest, but since I’m overseas I have to pay about 4 times the minimum required at home. It’s a kind of stupid incentive to go home, and it’s not working.

Great site to determine how much interest you would accumulate based upon the interval of time you plan to pay back a loan.
