is 3000 too much?

ok, i’m looking for a goal of about 200 characters at the moment. from what i can see, i know about 60 characters at the moment. I’ve a friend tell me that 1200 is the number of chars you need to know to conduct day to day living in japan. I am more focused on korean and mandarin side of chinese characters. It is so much fun!
how many characters do people know around here? know how many radicals there are in chinese? also, how many chinese characters are commonly used in the korean language?
