Paul Nelson actually has plans... and a yard 3 years ago

I sold my house and moved across the country recently. I now live in a basement apartment. There is not a hedge maze in my near future. This is something I do want to do “someday” and cool enough that I want it on my list now.

    Version Two 3 years ago

So, I realized that I may not have enough space to make a maze that is actually difficult to solve. So this attempt was to create merely a “Labyrinth”, i.e. a long twisty path rather than a maze with decision points.

But, it’s now clear that my idea of putting potted plants at pre-determined places within the maze is getting in the way of the design. So… time to erase them and start over.

Also, maybe what I need is some sort of “visual motif” – i.e. a small pattern, curve, or shape that is repeated throughout the maze to make it more visually appealing?

    Version One 3 years ago

This one’s not bad. Too easy to solve, I think?

The goal is to get to the center, where the Crepe Myrtle tree is located.

Measured the space... 4 years ago

... now to design the maze. The space is oddly egg-shaped. I’ve decided that the outer wall will be cement pavers, to act as a kind-of curb so that cars do not accidentally back into the maze.

The center of the maze is a large, beautiful crepe myrtle tree. I’m thinking I’ll have small open areas (the four small circles) for individual flowering plants – to break up the mazeness of the design.

Step 1: Measure the space 4 years ago

I’ve got a space picked out. Now to measure it and transfer it to graph paper. The idea is to create a small, miniature hedge maze in the circle in the middle of my driveway.
