I’ve been playing a lot the past few days, and although it takes me a lot longer to warm up than it used to, my old sound is still there! Just need to work through the old routine every day…
How to play the trumpet again
How I did it: I practiced for a little while and then had an audition (which I did not win), then practiced a lot more and had another audition (which I got). Hopefully I will never put my trumpet back in the basement again, but who knows where life will take me. Since it is not my full time job, I will never be able to devote this much time to playing again, but hopefully I will join a local orchestra or jazz combo group eventually. Playing trumpet is my favorite hobby!

I was a jazz major my freshman year in college, but switched after only that one year and stopped playing because of some serious teeth issues. My teeth will finally be fixed after my last surgery this summer, and I am going to audition for the IU jazz bands in the fall…my senior year here. Wish me luck!
I quit playing the trumpet when I was 14, and I’ve just got it out again. Once I unstick the valves I’m hoping to give it another shot…and finally reach those really high notes!
I sat first chair in the trumpet section in sixth through eighth grade. Then in ninth grade I got sent to high school band and sat third chair. It eeked at me. I hated it, but it was really the same as ever. Same parts, same everything, but no solos. That’s OK. Solos made me nervous anyway.
Here’s the real secret: I actually want to play the french horn again. At one point our band didn’t have enough french horn players, so the director asked me to switch for a few months. I loved it… just loved it. I eventually switched back, but my desire to play the french horn continues. The problem? My dad bought me a professional trumpet (it’s gorgeous) and is so proud of it. I can’t bring myself to tell him I’d rather play the french horn. (See “be fearless” entry).
Sigh.
Soooo worth doing… For over 10 years I could play any brass instrument, started with trumpet. I got to a standard particularly on french horn that was quite high. I could have gone on to play in orchestra’s anywhere or been a music teacher. Thirteen years later and in the last months I have found my way back into bands. It is soooo awesome. I have even found myself standing on a beach at night playing, just playing for that release…. I love Music
I have one, an ex-girlfriend gave one to me. I am looking at it right now. I could put down my laptop and go play. Maybe tomorrow…
