I’ve lived about 1 1/2 hours away from Philadelphia for the majority of my life now. I’ve been there countless times, I have friends who live there, and I very much enjoy what Philadelphia has to offer (except all that homicide).
So why it is that I can’t manage to find my way about unless I’m on South St. is beyond me.
I spent some time on foot in the city over the past couple of days traveling to, from, and around a friend who lives on Spring Garden, which I’ve learned is south of Fairmount and north of Race St., which is north of Arch St., which is north of Market St.
I learned that the train station is on 30th and Market.
All that time spent in the city over the past several years was never on foot. I always drove to my destination and never walked anything more than the length of South Street, mostly because I never had to. This just proves that the best way to get to know an area is to experience it at a walking pace rather than trying to memorize street names and dodge the crazy cars that are trying to kill you. Well okay it doesn’t prove it, but it works for me.
This isn’t relevant, but I’m just gonna take this opportunity to talk a little shit and say that Philadelphia, though charming in its own ways, can’t hold a candle to the Big Apple.
