WendyLots of recent progress

I decided to join one of the online genealogy sites – I chose Ancestry.com. It’s not cheap, but so far it has been SO worth the cost of membership. I’m able to construct a tree there, and have access to LOADS of information – documents and official records, as well as information entered by other people. I’ve made a bunch of progress on this over the past month, and intend to do more over the course of the summer. 20 months ago

random1974GenPro

I started building up my family tree using GenPro (GenPro.com) which is a really good tool. I interviewed some people from my family to add breadth and depth to the tree. I also included my inlaws and siblings inlaws as part of my aim is to have something to leave behind for my kids and their cousins. Currently I have over 450 people and over 120 families. Recently due to interest from some relatives I have been looking a this again and discovered that GenPro has imporved the Report or publish feature – it generates a fully interactive website using all the info in the genpro/gedcom file. It looks really good – I’ve published the website and I’m waiting for feedback from my cousins. Unfortunately it does not allow others to update info online – so they have to downlad the program and the source file and maniplate the file – I can see many problems with this including – people being put off by having to learn a new software, also people may update files generating may versions that will take forever to syncronise. Does anyone know of a web based system that can incapsulate all the complexity of Genpro but allow on line data entry etc? ie. an online web 2.0 version of GenPro. 3 years ago

i was helping my grandmother sort through old papers in her desk and we found a family tree that dates back to her first ancestor in the USA. :o)

luckily, we can fill in the blanks from where it left off! yey!! 3 years ago

WendyGEDCOM is made of WIN!

I’ve completed my next action for this goal, which was to investigate software for the Mac. I found a program that looks good:

http://www.synium.de/sites/synium/macstammbaum/index.html

It also looks like it’s about to get even better, and when the new version comes out, I won’t have to pay to upgrade; it’ll be FREE! :)

So, of course my next next action would be to get some data into the program, and thanks to GEDCOM, and the hard work of some distant relation, I was able to import more than 8,000 records of family members, going all the way back to my ancestors from Scotland who came here in the 1600s. W00t!!!!! (I literally squealed out loud when I realized that the import was going to work, and I wouldn’t have to input all that data by hand myself)! :D Actually, the work for me now will be to remove some of those names; I think I need to do some pruning to my family tree, as some of those people are very distantly related, and probably not really necessary in my database.

So, I think my new next action is to play around with the new program, and decide how/who to cull. That sounds like the next logical thing to do. 4 years ago

WendyNext Action

I started doing this a while ago, using a Windows program. If I decide to stick with that program, I can’t do this on my own machine (but, since I already own the program, and do have access to Windows machines here, it might still be the best option). First though, I think I’ll investigate the various options for doing a family tree on a Mac. 4 years ago

MikePicture of my father's family

My sister gave me a great picture of my father’s family which I scanned in. It’s a picture of my dad and his 5 brothers and 1 sister and their mother. I’m not sure when it was taken but it has to be quite a while ago. Sadly my dad and his older brother are the only 2 still alive today. Click on the picture for a better view. 4 years ago

ButterscotchReally never ends

This is really an ongoing project. My mom and I are the family researchers. We have found several relatives and discovered so much about our heritage. It’s so important and wonderful to do this! 5 years ago

Perdyshawork in progress

I’ve done this pretty much as much as I can right now without spending a lot of money that I don’t have. I’ll keep doing it as a side-line without needing this goal open. 5 years ago

PerdyshaA bit further

Since coming home from Jena I have got a little further with this goal. With a little help from my friends. Some very kind people I know on a genealogy forum do look-ups for me on census returns because I am too poor to afford subscriptions for these things. 5 years ago

BarakIt's finished!

I’m going to get it printed out tomorrow on a 1.4 X 0.4 meters poster (!!)
you can examine it more closely here (click on “download the original size” – it’s quite big):
http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=231687709&size=o

In this final version I have decided to show only (!) 27 generations back, rather than the 87 generations (!!!!) I found recently thanks to some Google searches, mainly because it would take a while to figure out if they are real.
My family tree chart was done based on the research made by my Late Grandfather Knut, My mother and her Swedish aunt. Back when they did their research in the 80’s they weren’t able to chart all that info up on one chart.

The main purpose of doing this chart was to visualize my family tree in honor of my late grandfather’s work and to create a digital backup on the web just in case the originals get lost. 5 years ago

gottabekdbecause

this is a crazy thing for me to try and do right now.
bah – bye to it. 5 years ago

Barakalmost finished..!

I got the missing part of my family tree a few days ago – the swedish part. Now I just need now to make a hard copy of it and send it back to my grandmother’s sister in sweeden.

When I’ll come back to Israel from my vication in Norway I’m planning on printing it out on a big poster and make copies to my relatives too. 5 years ago

BlankVerseWorth doing, but very, very frustrating at times

Some of my Mother’s maternalk relatives were Mormon, including one Mormon pioneer, so there are plenty of records for some branches of my family. One thing to watch out for, however, is that you shouldn’t blindly accept everything that you find as being accurate because some of the people creating those genealogical records were not that rigorous.

Both of my grandfather’s, however, have been brick walls. For example, I’ve only just recently found my paternal grandfather’s birthdate in the World War I draft records.

Yes, it’s worth doing, but be prepared for brick walls, false leads, relatives with common names that make it hard to trace them, weird spellings in the census records, etc. 5 years ago

skigirl227my family tree...

I did this circa 1995-96 for a freshman high school history project. Damn, to this day, my mom STILL wishes we had it back since my teacher, Mr. Kibs, wanted to keep it as an example. 5 years ago

BarakI have currently traced back 50 generations !!!

I had a major break through today – my mother found out that although that first ancestor of mine lied about his father – there is still a huge tree on his mother side which is connected to even more kings and queens ..!

to be continued.. 5 years ago

Perdyshaadvice?

So far I’ve been doing this on paper. I got a trial program free with a magazine, but never really got the hang of it. Do and of you recommend a particular program (for a pc) that I can splash out on when I graduate? 5 years ago

WendyI've started this . . .

Although the program I have for it is a PC program, and I’m now using a Mac. But I have loads of resources with which I can start, and then maybe take the research even further. One of these days. 5 years ago

Barak27 Generations charted up..!

let’s see anyone here beats this ;)

With help of my mother, once again I managed to make progres on this, finishing the connection to our oldest ancestors we know of .. the connection goes all the way up to the Norweigian kings at the start of the last millenium..

View a full sized chart over here !!

there are still a lot of names which are listed in my grandfather’s old notes which I plan on adding to my tree soon.. 5 years ago

Barak2nd draft out..

This is what I came up with together with my mother today.. I figured out how to add photos to the individuals.. I already have 11 different generations back showing up in the chart so far.. (all the way back to the 16th century!).
Even though I have huge lists at home of people and dates which I plan to add to the chart, I am relieved of how easy it is to insert the data/pictures and customize the different graph views, without getting a severe headache thanks to FTM’s friendly interface.

cathibethAnother word of advice....

If you use anyone else’s research, including parents, double check the sources because there may be a mistake.

Take my Great Aunt Mary, who I have fond memories of. She was the genealogist for my Baxter line (Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina). She worked her whole adult life on this line. Apparently, one of my ancestors had two wives… she tracked the wrong line! But most everyone took it as fact, that is, until I disproved it.

So, double check, then triple check! It will save you a lot of time in the end. 5 years ago

Barak1st draft finished..!

This is what I came up with together with my mother today.. six generations back so far..

I am planning on:
1. Adding more details to each person.
2. Adding all the 27 generations (!) we know of
3. Adding more photos (as soon as I learn how to)

view it here in it’s original size (2962×1261). 5 years ago

MikeSome of it's done

I’ve charted quite a bit of my father’s side. His side is Polish and I found relatives in Poland by searching the internet. I even went to visit them in 1998. I met many cousins and even visited the village where my grandfather and grandmother were born. I’d like to go back to Poland again to do more research. I’d also like to find out more about my mother’s side. Her father was from Ireland. I’ve traced it back a little ways but not too far. 5 years ago

eburcatUntitled

I’ve used phpGedView and it works great!
In a couple of days we’re going to have some family changes (my brother gets married), so it’s an oppotunity to share my research with everybody – online. Hopefully other people in the family will add more info. 5 years ago

cathibethThis is one of my occupations!

Something I do for passion, something I do to fund my subscriptions to services! Need help, ask away, I’ll see what I can do! 5 years ago

BarakThis information needs to be visualized

My mother has done some extensive research on my father’s family tree back in the 90’s. My grandfather and grandmother have done excellent work in researching our Norwegian and Swedish family trees.
My hope is to gather as much of this information available and visualize it up as one big spectacular wall chart.

As for now I plan on using Family Tree Maker 2006 to do the work.

Objectives:
  • Creating it while the older generations are still around to help me fill in all the correct details.
  • Creating a first digital copy of my family heritage (easy to store and pass on).
  • Being able to see clearly the family connection of our more distant relatives and bolding their names out on the chart (Rafi, our roots in America, The Albanian side, S. Goldschmidt and The Asido family). 5 years ago
