I won’t say it wasn’t a lot of work, and I won’t say it is perfectly landscaped into my lot either. But I love it, the sound of the pond is soothing and my little koi babies (both the parents and the wee ones) are priceless.
I’m in MN so it’s currently frozen over for winter, but the wee ones are in a tank in the kitchen waiting for spring to come. I’d be happy to offer advice, or if you’re in the area come spring and need some lil koi, I might be able to hook you up.

No koi for now

As much as I would love to be a koi guru, a pond just doesn’t fit into my landscaping goals right now. To add a pond would be a stretch, and it wouldn’t jibe well with the overall theme.

I read Koi need a lot of space and that’s too much digging for me!

I’ve always wanted to raise koi, but I don’t want to be half-ass about it, as I know I might tend to be. My goal is to be the kind of guy who studies the history of koi breeding, monitors their water regularly, attends koi conventions, consults with koi experts around the world. I mean, unless I’m willing to do all this, I might as well get goldfish. Right?

This is one of the things I know for sure we have to do in our new lot.

I dont even own my own house, or have a realistic shot of doing so anytime to soon. Thats at least 5-7 years off. So this is a VERY long term goal. But I really do want to do this one, I used to think fish were boring, but my girlfriend (now fiance, soon to be wife) insisted we get a goldfish, and my fascination has blossomed from there.
One day….one day.

I hate my pond-when we bought our house it was there in the backyard but we didn’t know about it since it was the dead of winter when we signed all the paperwork. The night before we move in, the snow has melted and most of the water has drained itself out of the pond, so we’re standing there in 40-degree weather filling the damn thing back up so the eight fish that were left behind won’t die (what can I say-we’re softies).
Fast-forward sixteen months later—the pump clogs with algae, I’ve spent loads of money on chemicals to clear up the algae and other stuff, we forget to feed them on a regular basis, and only ONE FISH HAS DIED. There is nothing better I’d like to do than find good homes for the other seven fish, drain it, and fill it in, but I think we’re stuck with it forever.

I have built two koi ponds so far. The second was bigger than the first. I still haven’t built the koi pond of my dreams. It’ll be a big one!!!

for my goldfish, Enoch. I might get a koi or three if there is enough room. The pond is going to sit on my balcony (I live in the city). I can’t wait to see it done!
