I started the advanced Michel Thomas french course, and I’ve started reading a French book. Sentences are starting to build themselves subconsiously which is a great feeling!

Well I’m approaching week 4 of my course (obviously I found and enrolled in one ;), It goes well I know I’ve learned a hell of a lot in the last few weeks, enough to be daunted by the journey ahead, but I’m used to that having biked for 6 months, although it’s now grey matter and muscle that needs the workout.

The difficulties in learning aren’t helped by my difficulties in meeting new people in Toulouse, something I’ve never had issues with before, I guess because I’m living here it’s a different experience and it’s hard to tell if I someone speaks even a little English just by looking at them.

I’m going to see if I can enrol in tandem projects through the school and I’m hitting couchsurfing to try and meet some people (blessedly the site tells you peoples language skills (a definite bonus).

So things are.. Going well I think :). We’ll see if in 3 months I can dispense with worrying so much and have more confidence, back to the grindstone for me!

I’m in a beginner’s French course at my university. It actually does force me to really engage more in the learning process and I like that but I know I’ll need some additional resources at some point. Right now I’m happy with learning the basics. I have met some people online who can help me with the language too… it’s easy to find people who are willing to help with the languages I’m learning

My boyfriend is from France, near Nimes. And since we started dating I’ve been trying to learn French. His parents don’t speak any English, so conversations are damned near impossible.

Before I first went to France, I surrounded myself in French. French music, movies, watching familiar movies with French sub-titles… Anything and everything. I even got the “Living Language” collection for French.

My only problem was it wasn’t motivating enough. I had to listen to a CD and follow along with the provided book. It wasn’t working for me at all.

I was too shy to try to speak French with my boyfriend, silly little things like that kept me from trying to use it at all. I felt help-less. But I was determined.

I spent a month in France. You’d think that being surrounded by it for that long would somehow sink in. My only problem with that was my boyfriend and I spoke in English. His siblings spoke to me in English. I was in France, but was surrounded my English. So I didn’t use what I did know in French and wasn’t able to progress as much. By the last week, I was at least able to understand what was directly spoken to me, but sometimes backwards. It was somewhat confusing. I spent most of that month zoned out whenever everybody around me would speak to each other.

When I returned back to the states, I made more of an effort to learn it. I got the French Rosetta Stone and started working on that every night after work. This went on for about 3 weeks. And then I lost the amusement or something and stopped.

I really would like to learn French. So now I’m taking an Elementary French course at the nearby college and I’m learning it. I’m motivated and since my boyfriend is away at med-school, I’m not embarrassed by it.

When I go back to France for Christmas, I can’t wait to actually hold a conversation! It’s a learning process and I know that I can’t just know everything overnight.

Everybody that’s made learning French a goal, Just stick with it and do it! So far, it’s so worth it.
