Sheesh, took me a while! :)

Finally got Desktop up and running 3 years ago

Got K-Ubuntu (amd64) installed and running, beautifully.

I have to say, that was impressive, from the time of popping in a disk, through a couple of questions, and to a nice KDE desktop. Ubuntu project has come a long way since its Debian roots.

Halfway there, again 3 years ago

Server seems to be ok now (might have been an electric socket issue). The UPS complains, says the socket is not grounded. Will fix, eventually.

The desktop still eludes me. I have a new SATA drive, which I hope to dual boot into WinXP and (K)Ubuntu. The next free weekend I have, I’ll set that as the boot drive and set everything up.

    Server died 3 years ago

Arrrrrrrrrrgh! Home server has died, shortly after a lightning storm. Foolish Dmitri, not using a UPS… arrrgh.

I have some of the config files backed up.

Hmm. Maybe I should look into colocating.

    Server up 3 years ago

Ok, home server is set up with the full stack, and accessible from the outside via the dyndns.org dynamic DNS client.

    Next up:
Install new hard drive on desktop; dual-boot WinXP and (K)Ubuntu.

LAMP stack good to go! 3 years ago
Two full days of setup later, everything seems to be working together on my work server (running Debian Sarge):
    • Apache 2 (+ SSL and WebDAV)
    • PHP 4
    • MySQL 4
    • phpMyAdmin
    • Webalizer
    • Subversion
    • Trac bug tracking software (plus Subversion integration)
    • SSH daemon
    • FTP daemon (for remote editing via Emacs/ange-ftp)
    Next up:
    • Set up the same on my home server
    • Open up the requisite ports in the home firewall
    • Set up an (K)-Ubuntu desktop

    First step 3 years ago

    Whew, ok! First step taken—
I installed Debian 3.1r1 (Sarge) on a server that a coworker donated.
Had some trouble with the SCSI hard drives on it, but it all worked out eventually; so far so good.
Now, to install Apache, MySQL, PHP/Python, and Sqeak Smalltalk.

    DONE 3 years ago

with the set up part at least.

I used 2 old machines that I had sitting around. They are now both running Fedora Core 4, one as a server and one as a workstation (desktop).

The server needs some more software installed/setup but eventually it is going to be a media server. The workstation… well the plan is to start using it daily and see how much of my everyday work I can get done there (as opposed to on my WinXP box)
