I loved the 1992 version of John Steinbeck’s novel starring Gary Sinise and John Malvokich. The film captured the essence of the story’s setting, the warm scent of the California earth, the depth of character development, and the stellar performances of it’s cast by not only Sinise and Malkovish but notably Ray Walston and Sherilyn Fenn.
This is only one of my reasons for visiting the National Steinbeck Center and his childhood home located a few blocks away from the museum in the Salinas Valley. That this film committed itself to the delicate history of the book was something I appreciated as a fan of Steinbeck’s pure talent as a writer and translator of California’s golden and relatively recent past.

A fun little tale of great but little-known historical importance. Entertaining and informative, fun and serious.

This is one of my favorite books and the movie translated exceptionally well. The cast of characters is fantastic and the story itself held me spellbound.

Daniel Day Lewis’ acting, intense human drama, religious fervor, and a glimpse into a part of California history… I could almost smell the dusty earth mixed with the oil-tinged air.

I laughed out loud at this beautiful film, caught myself thinking of unexpected outcomes and was intrigued by the fantastic graphic design of the opening credits. The writing was spot on, acting was excellent, location was simply and naturally charming!
