"I got a job tech. writing as I wanted to have someone pay me while I learned to write. It worked."
How I did it: I paid someone else to write a resume (I wouldn't have had a clue at the time!) then went on job interviews. (The time frame listed is a guess!)
I took the first job offered and worked my butt off learning the job. I took every professional class I could get my boss and customers to pay for, took classes at the local college, took seminars at a university 2 hours away.
It helped that we lived in the desert at the time and that everyone wanted to become a programmer, not a tech. writer. (It was assumed that I really wanted to be a programmer, people were amazed when I said that I really wanted to be a tech. writer!)
Lessons & tips: If you want something badly enough, go for it! You may not get it, or, if you do, like I did with this, you may have to work hard to keep what you've gotten.
Resources: Eventually, I needed more than I could get from classes, some of that I got by joining STC. See www.stc.org for more information.
