Last week I purchased a curriculum set for my students called “Every Picture Tells a Story.” Included are 40 black and white photographs and a leader’s guide with ideas on using the “evocative” photos in discussions.
The set arrived yesterday and I’m disappointed to say the least. Of the 40 pictures, I’d say only 15-20 are usable. Some are “artistically blurry” which is to say that they’re blurred action shots that really serve no purpose because you can’t tell what they are. There are a lot of random people, some of which are very good but others, again, don’t seem to serve the purpose they’re intended for. Plus they’re an odd size—6×10 inches or thereabouts, which make it difficult to post on the wall and have each student actually see what the picture is.
Anyway…I LOVE this idea. So I’m going to set out and take my own series of “evocative” black and white photographs, print them out as 8×10, and use them in my lessons.
I’m planning on taking a good mix of scenery/people/action/object/etc shots…this will also be a good summer project!
