I’ve only been writing songs/trying to write songs for the past year, and I will admit I think they are getting better – because they are less rigid and bland – but I keep getting sick of what I write really quickly – like a couple of days [usually a week] later, and I’d like to be able to write a decent song that I will be satisfied with.
I know it’s natural to get sick of what you write, but I think getting sick of what you write in such a small space of time is a bit too fast.

Start with the simplest component. For instance if I have a tune in my head I’ll first sit down with my guitar and figure out what chords compose the melody. With this simple melody I’ll then build a lyrical structure. Unless you already have something in mind don’t worry about actual lyrics at this point just fill it with rhythmic vocalizations or even nonsensical phrases.(Try not to feel like an idiot at this point; you might feel embarrassed singing “dumpty-dumpty-la-di-la-di-la” to yourself or your creative partners but remember that it is not the finished song. A sculptor’s lump of clay doesn’t look too pretty while the sculptor molds it, but he knows he’s working towards beauty and completion.) Once I am comfortable with my lyrical structure I create the actual lyrics. When I am satisfied with the lyrics and can play the melody smoothly I embellish the music and refine it.
Because I am more lyrically gifted than musically I typically build my songs off of lyrics, often just a lyrical phrase. First I work the meter of the lyric(s) in to a rhythm. If a melody hasn’t already come to me I work the rhythm into a song by experimenting with different chord groups on my guitar in an appropriate time signature. Even if I just have a single lyric I can still write the rest of the song by using rhythmic vocalizations until I can come up with well thought out lyrics.
just write about things that interest you or things that are on your mind…then put them into rhyming phrases and pretty soon you’ll have a decent songe!=D
I changed the tuning on my new electric to drop C the other night and wrote some new things on it, as well as some new material on my acoustic, as it’s in open D.
Weirdest thing, I had a dream I went to perform one of my songs on some sort of talent show, but I refused to sing. Funny thing was, they had some dude orchestrating the rest of a band piece and I ended up writing an entirely new song ad lib as the other guys played.
Sweet.
Ironically Zen is sailing
This is going to be one of the hardest goals for sure. Damn, what was i thinking? Write a song? Come on…
The problem is not writing, it’s writing something useful! All I can seem to create is fragments of songs and bits of melodies. Hmm…
Need to find a way of sorting this out!
