How I did it: I took a temporary job in a medical billling office. The job offered a bonus of 60% of your annual salary if you stayed through the transition--approximately 1 year. I toughed it out to earn that money, which I used to pay for my trip and pay off some debt. Read how I did it…

With this trip. Definitely headed to Europe, not sure where else. I am planning on taking a couple of months off next summer (July, August, maybe September 2010) and heading overseas. I just have to save enough and negotiate unpaid leave at work (or look for a new job to come back to).
Now that I’ve finally settled down enough to have furniture and white goods, I want to travel!
It seems to go that you have three choices in life: kids, career or travel…
Granted, some do all three.
I’m taking the travel option. I’m a youth worker by trade, which seems to have broken my clucky button; kids are great providing you can leave them in someone else’s care at the end of the day and go home to a nice glass of wine and some chill out time ;)
So, check and check on kids and career. Efficiency! Now, travel.
Everyone seems to be put off by Europe because it’s expensive. I’ve decided I can’t care about that. It’s where i want to go, so I’ll just have to make it work.
As my first small step, yesterday, I bought an atlas. Along with lots of maps, it has a brief summary of each of the worlds countries so I can start making a short list! Also, it’s small enough to fit in my bag so I can take it with me where ever i go. That means that while i’m traveling on buses and trains, I can plan bigger travels on planes!
I want to travel overseas with my wife who has an Italian background. She is keen to take me to Italy and see the big cities like Rome, Milan, Turin, Florence and her favourite, Venice, where I have an ambition to ride in a gondola. I also want to sample the local food and wine and visit the historical sites, particularly in Vatican City.
kcmastere is amazing
Ive never been overseas at all, my entire life. thats a little sad. If I want it, i gotta save for it. My number one destination would be Japan! That would be the best ever.
I think I would like to go alone though. My boyfriend has already been. I hate having a new experience with someone who has already done it before. Plus i think I would enjoy it on my own – getting lost in Tokyo oooh yeah!!

I’ve covered my walls with maps out of national geographic magazines. I’ve got the British Isles, Italy, Africa, Asia-Pacific, the U.S., and Mexico so far. The funny thing is I thought they’d be expensive and they cost less than two dollars for that many. I love how detailed they are and how they remind me of how big the world is.
I keep telling myself if I keep thinking about far away places I won’t be able to stop myself from traveling when I get the funds to do so. Maybe I can travel abroad to learn languages (another goal).
