I discussed with Tom taking next year off and establishing in-state residency 11 months ago

by living with roommates off-campus and working. I told him this would save about $15,000 a year in tuition. I had some anxiety and guilt about asking him; guilt that I couldn’t provide him with his college education. He was fine with the idea. It will be a character building experience for him and I believe he’s motivated to finish college and won’t get off track.

and I haven’t seen him since September. He’s skinnier, his hair’s bushy, but he’s grown up some; this is nice to see. I’m so happy to have him home again and so proud of his increasing independence and accomplishments.
