Starting Point
I have a couple of books to work through as part of this goal. First one is the Motley Fool Personal Finance Workbook. I quite like their stuff so this will be a good starting point. For general reference I have the E&Y Personal Financial Planning Guide which got excellent reviews on Amazon. This will take a bit of time but I am looking forward to having a long term financial plan to follow.

I finally took the plunge and made an appointment to see a financial planner. I was made redundant from my work two months ago and it has really made me think about my financial future. I gave all my details, discussed my life goals and am just waiting now for the plan.
In Australia, the Financial Planning Association have a campaign running about how to get good financial advice. The link:

I should hopefully have this goal completed within the next few weeks. :-)

I am fortunate enough to be able to put a fair amount away for the future…”pay yourself first” is what John the finance guy says…which means to put away 10%...after awhile, you don’t even notice that money is not there to spend. I am a pharmacist, and I see so many elderly customers who did not or were not able to put any money away and now live on a meager Social Security check. Can’t count on our own government to provide…you have to provide for yorself.
