I’ve marked this as done. But it’s not really true. There is so much of information out there, and you can’t possibly internalize everything. Hacking is more of an attitude to life, it is more about creating something elegant. Like building a car by yourself or doing some (brilliant) evil for the lulz.
It is not simple to do this, that’s a given. Only your work can define you as a hacker and it so happens that sometimes you can’t really expose your work to the world, without getting into trouble.
I’ll never say that I’m a hacker. That would be like praising your own tail. Some of my favourite hackers are Douglas Engelbart and Joanna Rutkowska. (Some of her stuff influenced and inspired my work on rootkits.)
“A true hacker is not a group person. He’s a person who loves to stay up all night, he and the machine in a love-hate relationship… They’re kids who tended to be brilliant but not very interested in conventional goals. It’s a term of derision and also the ultimate compliment. ” – Alan Kay 2 months ago
