I did a lot of remodeling of my 80-year-old 2-story all-brick Colonial style home. Tried to bring warmth back into the house. Pulled carpets and linoleum and had the hardwood floors restored. Removed a wall that was added in 1990, opening up access to a sun room. Painted all the trim an off-white color (Monterey White from Benjamin Moore Historical Colors) - really brought a lot of warmth in. Painted the rooms using paint colors from Restoration Hardware - the colors just “seem” right to the age of the house. Took the 1990 kitchen cabinets (maple doors, veneer parts otherwise) and sanded all the corners and edges smooth (HUGE JOB) and put 2 coats of primer and several coats of paint on them, to make them look old but well-kept and in keeping with the age of the house. Also, got brown/rust-weathered-looking hardware for the cabinets. Got off-white kitchen appliances, including a Fridgidaire fridgerator that looks retro. Restored bathrooms and used pentagon-shaped little ceramic tile on the floors. Overall, my goal is warmth. I love a warm home. Choose warm colors, simple furniture (meaning, nothing terribly fancy or terribly modern—Pottery Barn-style sofas are great). I get a lot of complements from people who say my home is “very comfortable” to just spend time hanging out in.
