I had made it a goal for this trip to eat at a Waffle House in Georgia. Last time we drove to Florida, we started seeing Waffle Houses in the South and they appeared to be everywhere. The same was true this time, a Waffle House about every 15 minutes, some even mere blocks from another.
I wanted to eat at one in Georgia, so on Thursday night we stopped at a Waffle House in some no-name town, actually I dont even know if you could call it a town as there were about 2 gas stations, a few restaurants, and a stoplight. Anyhoo I discovered to my pleasant surprise that the place is a diner! So I thought, I must get breakfast here!
I got their big breakfast special, called the All Star or something like that, and it was: a big waffle with syrup, scrambled eggs, three pieces bacon, two pieces toast with butter and jam, and hashbrowns (or grits, which I wanted to try, but even our sweet southern waitress said don’t do it). I shared with my Dad and it was delish!! and it was like 6 bucks!!
We were there at 9:30ish PM and the place was full, all the booths, and singles and groups sitting at the counter the whole way round. (we noticed too as we drove along to Macon that all the WHs we saw later than night had people eating in them). Everybody seemed to know each other, the waitresses were so sweet, calling everyone honey and sweetie, and could not believe that we had never been to a Waffle House (one of them said, and I quote: “them poor kids”), they were shouting out the orders to the cooks who were laughing and chatting just like the waitresses. My poor mom was so uncomfortable, she does not like to stand out and we stood out like three sore thumbs. Our accent (or lack thereof, should I say), our camera, my hot pink hair and the Obama pin on my wrap…we even had the waitress take a picture and that nearly sent my mom over the edge. lol.
When we left there was a sign on the door saying “See you tomorrow!”; I could tell anyway that the clientele there are serious regulars. So friendly.
Loved the experience and would definitely do it again!
