i was in melbourne for some concerts earlier this year and I have realised that I would very much like to go back sometime, perhaps for a bit longer.

    I want to go back.

Do both. And don’t be fooled by either side saying their city is better than the other. But I’m biased towards Meblourne because my family lives there, even though I don’t. Art, food, a GREAT public transit system, reasonable weather most of the year, Melbourne’s got it. Spend some time in SouthBank and the CBD and if you’re in town from overseas and want to see the “cute” Australian animals go out ot Healesville wildlife sanctuary. Technically not IN Melbourne but close enough, remember that whole public transit thing…
If you want to traditional Aussie beaches, Melbourne’s not really the thing, the currents off the Antarctic make the water colder than I like without a wetsuit. But that’s why you also need to go to Sydney, right?
But while you’re in Melbourne drink plenty of VB (it’s beer, you won’t be able to miss it) and be sure and eat in Chinatown, Little Italy or one of the eateries in Prahran. There are some great little hole in the wall places elsewhere in the city too, stop in at a pub and ask people for suggestions.
But seriously, not to be a tourism board ad or anything, I spent several weeks in Melbourne during holidays over a few years and I like the pace, not quite as hopped up as Sydney but you can still find a club or a live band if thats your thing. Go to the footy or the cricket at the MCG. Ride the trams. Yay trams.
