I want to do this within the next five years. I know that seems like a long time, but I need to finish school and get things in order before we can move. I really want to do this though!

Living in Texas is not really for me, no matter how hard I try to make it work. I want something different, and a bit more of an adventure. I’ve applied to a few jobs in the UK over the last couple of years; this year I will make a more concerted effort (although the academic job market there is weirdly cyclical, making it pretty difficult until the next REA is done).

Move to the UK  — 3 months ago

Worth doing!

For a long time one of my goals on this site was to move to Canada. I’ve been here in Alberta for six months now and while I love it here, I now realise that this isn’t where I’m meant to be.

More and more I find myself thinking about London, where I’m originally from. All those things I used to hate about London- the crowds, the pollution, the weather- I now realise I miss. Where I live now everything is clean and relatively crowd-free. I thought this was what I wanted, but it’s actually freaking me out.

Therefore I’m planning to move there this summer. I can stay with my parents until I get myself sorted out. I’m not doing this with rose-tinted glasses, but I now realise I need the noise and crowds. Every day in London is an adventure- here I’m never going to be able to go into work and say that on the train I stood next to a burly 6’ guy dressed in a leather schoolgirl outfit like I did in London! And that’s just off the top of my head….

I want to work and live in the UK by or before Thanksgiving 2008  — 5 months ago

Well, folks… my heart has been inspired now for 2 years… I’m ready! It is time. I’m have much to do to get ready, but I’m capable and focused. Wish me well! Any advice to seeking employment or affordable housing would be appreciated.

All the best!

Made it - writing from my office in London  — 5 months ago

Worth doing!

OK, so i did it, and i am so glad as i would never have forgiven myself for not doing it. Got in just before the age cutoff for working holidaymaker visa. Did a little travelling in western Europe en route to London. My long term boyfriend is still back home and by the time we see each other again in April it will have been 6 months apart – hard time, but we’re still strong as ever.

Looking for a job and home in December was a cold slog though i knew it would be, and i got the job before my birthday and the room by Xmas as planned, so the timetable was realistic. Hardest bit has been finding new friends because i was kind of financially tight at first and also kept getting colds as my body adjusted to the climate and different germs in this hemisphere, so i was out of action a fair bit early on.

London is an amazing, vibrant, busy place, dense and rich in every sense – like biting into a black forest cake with King Island cream. Can’t be bored here. And like the Sydney girl i met working at Beach Blanket Babylon said: Australia is a farm. i will go back to the farm and i will love the ease of living and the warmth and my friends, but not just yet!

I love everything about the UK, their accents, the night life, the people. It would be a dream come true to be able to live there for a while.
I am a travelling physician and from what I understand, it is nearly impossible to get registered with the GMC. If anyone has any information re: expediting the process, please hit me up.

It’s a little depressing because this goal is so closely linked to several other goals, specifically the ones tying up my money. My goal of earning a living with my writing could jump-start me on my way to the UK goal…and before I move, I’d have to be extremely secure financially for my extended future, if indeed I have one. After all, who says I have an extended future?
All I know is if I don’t, I’m going to be bloody annoyed!

UK Dreams  — 7 months ago

Ever since I can remember I’ve hated living in Australia. Sure it’s pretty in places and it has other good points, but I die a horrible, sticky death every summer! In my perfect little ME/CFS free imaginary world I would finish my degree, work for a year or so as a Librarian here, then find a job and move to the UK. Somewhere north where it’s nice and cold and peaceful. Of course, my planned tour of the UK will also be doubling as a kind of inspection to see whether my hopes are idealic or right on the money. In the meantime, I still dream, and plot, and dream some more.
