Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

JannikePainting job will be finished today

Right now my house looks chaotic, but today the painter will finish painting bedroom and bathroom, and we can move all furniture back. The bedroom floor is also new. I so look forward to cleaning and tidying up. We decided that a lot of “stuff” from the bedroom will not be put back again, so there will be some sorting and donating / throwing away old clothes, cosmetics, Magazines.. 3 months ago

JannikeI like to repair things instead of throwing them away and buying new

Yesterday I started at the top of a pile of clothes and other stuff that needed mending and worked right down to the bottom. (Two pair of jeans, a dress, two tableclothes.) The second tablecloth was crocheted in quite an intricate pattern, and had several holes in it. I managed to reconstruct the pattern quite well, not by crocheting, but using more like a tatting technique to build up the missing parts. You can see it if you look at it really close, but otherwise it blends in. I was actually very proud of myself, that I managed to repair it. 2 years ago

JannikeYesterday I managed to do quite a lot of housework

Ironing, cooking my sons favourite dinner, cleaning the house, ...
The energy in the apartment gets so much better when we put some work into making it nice and clean. 2 years ago

JannikeDid some more housework

Yesterday I did all the ironing and cleaned out a cupboard in the kitchen.
I sorted a pile of recipes torn out from newspapers and magazines – discarded some, put the rest in a binder.
Today I just reorganized one kitchen-drawer and did some paperwork.
If I continue to do a little extra housework every day, I suppose that I sometime in the far future will have a well organized home. 2 years ago

JannikeI was very inspired to do housework today

Cleaned bathroom and toilet
Cleaned the cupboard under the sink in the kitchen, took out and cleaned and sorted everything inside.
Cleaned doors and floor in the kitchen.
Cleaned inside the refrigerator and washed the loose shelves, sorted the food inside.
Took out ashes from the fireplace and put in new logs.
Took out paper for resirculation
Took out plastic for resirculation
Washed three machines full of clothes
And of course – made dinner. 2 years ago

JannikeHave started to move things into my daughters old room

I had to wait for a while after my daughter moved out before I started to use her room for other purposes. Today I moved my sewing machine and my serger (which I never have learned how to use properly) into her old room. They used to stand at the floor in our bedroom, gathering dust and adding to the clutter. Now they have got a new home in my daughters old room, which maybe can become my new sewing room (which I have never had before.)
Getting the machines out of our bedroom inspired me to clear out some more clutter. I have a small desk in the corner of our bedroom which used to be covered with books, papers and stuff. Now it is almost empty, just the lamp and a box of pens and pencils.
I think both clutter and neatness have a tendency to spread. If you start to tidy up on place, you get inspiration to do more. 2 years ago

JannikeI am planning how to use the empty room after my daughter who recently moved out

My daughter came home to visit today, and I asked her if she would mind if I moved my sewing machine and some other things into her old room. (The sewing machine is one of the things that are standing at the floor in our bedroom, because I have not found anywhere else to put it). Also I have some stacks of books that I would like to move in there.
She did not mind at all, but appreciated me asking. So now I can make her old room look like somebody lives there again and get some stuff out of our overfilled bedroom. 2 years ago

JannikeMade a fire in the fireplace today - first time this winter

After dinner I moved my favourite chair in front of the fireplace and sat down with a good book, a cup of coffee and a piece of dark chocolate.
I was able to read the whole rest of my book without being disturbed – my husband did the dishes.
I think that will be my new favourite place in my home. 2 years ago

JannikePacked away the Christmas decorations

I had a red and green tablecloth for the dinner table during Christmas(very Christmassy,)and the dining room became kind of bleak and sad when I replaced it with a pale green tablecloth.

I think I will have to get a new tablecloth in intense warm colors. Maybe I should make one myself (patchwork, inspiration from Kaffe Fassett)? Or buy one. I will think about it – how to introduce some warmer colors now in the cold season. 2 years ago

JannikeA special day today, my daughter is moving out

My 20 year old daughter is moving out today, it feels kind of sad. On the other hand all her cosmetics and clothes and things are going away too, so maybe it will be a little easier to be organized at home. But I will really miss her very much. A good thing that she is not moving so far away, so I will still se her probably every week.
Still, it is a big change! 2 years ago

JannikePreparations for a new year - "weeded" in my kitchen

I spent some hours in my kitchen today and threw away food that had passed its expiration date, sorted, organized and cleaned, so now all my foodstuff is well organized. 2 years ago

JannikeTransformation of an old chair

I inherited a sofa and two chairs from my parents. Originally they were of really good quality, but now they are old and the seat in one of the chairs is all worn out. There are holes through the material and it would be quite expencive to have it reupholstered.

I took a homemade quilt and draped it over the chair, so now it looks colorful and welcoming. It has actually become my favorite corner for reading and it has softened the impression of our livingroom, which has mostly old inherited furniture.

I enjoy to find smart solutions that do not involve using a lot of money. 2 years ago
