I’m half Greek and grew up hearing it in Church and when my mother’s side of the family was around. I’ve always loved it, but have never known more than a few phrases and conversational words here and there. So now I’m determined to become fluent. I’m doing some online courses right now and will take a class this fall at school, so I’m really putting both feet in.

If plans work out, I’ll be in Greece by July after I finish summer classes and before the start of a new, long school year. It will be an awesome vacation and, hopefully I’ll be able to chat conversationally with the Greek locals by then. My learning tool of choice is a Modern Greek collection of 5 cds that I rented from the library. I listen to them while i’m driving which is great because i live about 30 minutes away from school and it gives me a lot of time to practice.

i’ve never actually learned Greek. I took a trip to Athens and the Greek Isles this past spring break, and there’s nothing I’d rather do than return in a few years, and actually be able to speak to the locals.

It took me long enough but I’m there now. Ιt does wonders for your self-esteem.

I am bilingual, half-greek, half uruguayan, but I’ve spent all my life in Greece. Greek it quite a difficult language to learn but it’s very beautiful. It might not be as impressive as spanish (my maternal language) but it’s very different from many other languages and that makes it so interesting. And so is greek culture. The language is quite unique and I suggest that you accomplish your goal, because it’s worth it! I’m fluent in greek and I’m really happy about it :)

Almost everyone in my family is Greek. It’s really hard to talk to most of my relatives because of the language gap. I’ve been wanting to learn Greek since first grade but I never got past simple phrases. That’s why I’m going to try and stick to it and finally learn Greek before I go visit Greece next year.
