How I did it: We needed a house and we were almost starting from scratch so hard work and a systematic approach of painting, plastering and cleaning got us where we are today. Read how I did it… 10 months ago
And every time we come home from a vacation, long or short, we are reminded of how much we love it, even with all its faults. We still need to repaint the outside and do some other minor jobs but the important thing is that we are happy and comfortable here. It is home. 10 months ago
We’re at 85% clean and have a pretty table full of wrapped gifts in the corner of the living room. Feels very sweet and homey- until I consider that it took the boyfriend being out of town for me to make the time to detail clean the kitchen without it being immediately messed up, and that only the gifts I purchased are wrapped…
Also, I haven’t yet figured out how to clean the giant windows.
Hoping for some movies and cuddling in the clean house today puts the “home” touch on the holiday season. 17 months ago
Todd actually bought the supplies to repair the concrete outside! That is a HUGE step! That means he could actually start the project any time instead of deciding one Saturday morning he’s going to do it and then dragging all of us to Lowe’s for a whole day to buy the materials and then not starting until after church the next day which means he only has a half day of work… Yay!
Also, he hung the railings on the back stairs which means I won’t have to go down steps one at a time in the middle of the night, afraid for my life.
We hung curtains upstairs. This clears out some of the blanket chest and the dark curtains keep out some of the heat and light.
We are still looking for a wardrobe of some sort for extra storage. We found out in Indianapolis on a tour of one of the historic houses we visited that closets weren’t built into old houses because owners had to pay taxes on each room of the home and a closet counted as a room so they just didn’t build any. Good thinking…for THEM! 22 months ago
We had discovered that behind the radiators in the living room, there was literally no plaster on the walls…the brick was just exposed. In addition, the roof had leaked above it (since fixed and probably the cause in the first place) resulting in the paint and plaster (new!) bubbling out up and down the wall along the window. So Todd unhooked the water supply to the radiators and dragged them out to clean and paint while we repaired the wall. Despite the unbearable heat and humidity of the season, this job is one that must be done in the summer since you can’t turn off your heat in the winter!
If you’ve never had to push a radiator across your floor and over the doorjamb onto your porch then you’re not aware that they weigh hundreds of pounds. And then Todd decided that he might as well pull out three more of them to clean and paint while the pipes were all disconnected so now it seems we have a major project on our hands. The plaster behind each of them is, if undamaged, at least in need of cleaning and paint itself.
This project isn’t exactly aesthetic but Todd and I will have the satisfaction of having done it right.
Next up: repairing the cement on all the steps outside… 22 months ago
