I got hooked on developing my photos when I took a class in college. At that time the darkroom was open 24/7 and I would go in when nobody else was there. I loved it. Watching the picture appear is like watching magic. Sadly that darkroom shut down and I don’t think there is another one open to the public here. I want to set up something here at home but can’t find the space for it. We’ll see what I can get done.

I remember doing alot of this last year in my Computer Arts class. We did everything from traditionally loading black and white film, to taking school trips downtown to take pictures and then developing them the days after.
If there’re any Community Centres or Art Studios you could go to, I’m sure you could get access to a dark room, easy. It’s a great feeling doing everything from start to end yourself. And the process is alot easier than one can imagine. Well, everything except dealing with the chemical/acid fumes. Bahh.

When I was younger, I helped my grandfather build his dark room in the garage. It wasn’t much, just one wall connectiong two others, some plumbing, painting- things like that. Afterwards, we spent the rest of the time I was there taking black and white photographs and developing them in his dark room. Those were good times :)

I love developing my own negatives. When I wa sin HS I learnt how to develop B&W pictures along with everyone in the photography club. In the end, I was on the only one developing the pictures for the club.

I love black and white pictures, and it would be cool to decorate my place with cool pics of places I’ve been and people I love.

There is nothing more spectacular than seeing your print come up on the paper. The first time I developed a print, it was a euphoric feeling. I love photography, and I could spend DAYS just in a darkroom, making prints, fiddling with the enlarger or toning…

I love the darkroom. I love the smell of developing chemistry. I love the amber lights and cranking the enlarger up and down. I love swirling my print around in the fixer and squeegeeing it before I hang it to dry. I love photography.

So much more fun and satisfying than Photoshopping digital images. Sometimes it takes several hours to get one print just right, but there’s something satisfying about getting chemicals all over your hands, and working in the dark for several hours and then finally producing an amazing print.
