I’m not alone. It has a name! The 100 Thing Challenge was started by a guy named Dave Bruno.
The idea is simple. Whittle down your personal possessions to 100 things. We are too attached to our “stuff”. Ours is a culture of rampant consumerism. We place more emphasis on things than people sometimes, and it’s eating us up. This goes hand-in-hand with my other goal, to “Throw things away”.. but this is a bit more focused.
For me, it really began after my recent trip to Europe, where I lived out of a backpack for 2 weeks, I was struck by something very simple: I didn’t miss anything. Not a single thing from my apartment. I didn’t once wish I had brought an extra item; in fact, I wished I had packed less! So, when I returned from my trip I began taking stock of what I have, and started what I hope will be a Mass Exodus of Stuff!!
I started with my futon. I Freecycled it. Now there’s more space in my living room!! :)
I might not make it to just 100 items, and there are a few things that are definitely off limits for now, such as my books. But it’s a nice idea to have in the back of my mind as I begin this wonderful process. And thanks to Dave Bruno for giving it a name! :)
