Read the news
Researched the candidates on political websites
I also looked at each candidates websites. One judge that was up for election in Texas is extremely lax on crime. I did not know this (and might have voted for him!) until I visited his website.
Lessons & tips: If you aren't going to have a basic understanding of what each candidate stands for, don't vote!
