Don’t learn the messed-up pronunciation of Spain or other countries! Mexico is also the BIGGEST Spanish-speaking country, so it’s more important to know Mexican Spanish.

When we got here, I wan’t even confident enough about my Snapish to tell people that I spoke it more than just somewhat. Now I consider myself, although not completely perfect at it, a Spanish speaker! Yay!

Attended a great school in Oaxaca 2 years ago

I spent about a week studying nouns prior to Oaxaca, then spent 5 days (3-4 hours per day) in school in Oaxaca (learning verbs), plus 3-4 hours a day of studying.

I’m amazed at how much I learned in such a short time. I was able to understand alot of what people were saying outside of the school, and was able to communicate some basic things.

I plan to continue studying now that I am back.

The school I attended was called Amigos del Sol, and I highly recommend it.

going to start learning in Oaxaca 2 years ago

I’m visiting Oaxaca this March to attend some classes. In the meanwhile, I plan to start with Rosetta Stone.

putting this on hold until I get more free time. 3 years ago

Too much is on my plate right now so this goal is going on hold. I need a few quick goals to work on for a while.

I want to go back! 3 years ago

Well, my trip went really quickly. 4 weeks in Mexico, 3 of which I was studying. I feel like I definitely learned a lot, but at the same time I still have so much more to learn. And such a great vacation too, getting to see a new country at the same time.

To anyone thinking of doing it, I would say go! It’s a great experience! I met so many new people, from so many different places and with so many different life experiences. And what better way to learn a language than by being forced to only speak that language. And I guess I have a new appreciation for learning a language—once you’re in a real setting, then you can really tell how much you’re getting your point across. Once you start seeing less of the blank stares, it’s a big morale booster, but then other times, needing to revert to English with native Spanish speakers is a blow to the ego.

But I just hope that I can continue to practice while I’m back in my old life!

how to tell my parents?? 3 years ago

Would you believe I am nearly 30 and this is still an issue? I guess I am still their baby! Any potential danger and they freak out. But I’m gonna have to figure this out, cuz believe me, if I’m gone for a month and they don’t hear from me, you’ll be seeing me on the news like the Runaway Bride woman. I can totally sympathise with her.

I am going!!! 3 years ago

Very excited, I just got the registration confirmation today. It’s really going to happen! Well, only going for a month, but at least it’s a start. I can be more adventurous and go for a year next time ;)

almost... 3 years ago

Ok, any day now I am going to commit to it. I have been researching where to go, what to do…I am really excited. I have been spending way too much work time plotting! Well, just got to tell my boss I’ll be gone for a little bit…and then I can make the real plans :)
