I already try to make everything my daughter eats organic…. so why not what me and my husband eat ( or try to). I also want to teach my child to respect the earth in addition to other people…
How to become more green
How I did it: I broke in down into 3 categories. Work, Home, Social.
Work:
A bin for trash and a bin for recycle.
bring a mug to work for coffee instead of using styrofoam
buy recycle paper products
buy plastic forks and spoons that are biodegradable made out of corn oil or potato.
Home:
Recycle
change to energy saving lightbulbs
buy organic fruits and veggies that do not use pesticides
use greensaver bags for grocery items
check your home to find out what you are wasting energy on.
start a compost pile
Social
If it is within 5 miles try walking not driving
frequent green restaurants and spaces
when buying a car look at fuel effiency. I own a new vw beetle
Donate old clothing instead of throwing away
Lessons & tips: evaluate your life first and then come up with ways to solve the problems to make your life more green

- I haven’t used plastic bags in about forever and whenever I go shopping with my friends I either make them re-use a plastic bag or I make them use my tote bag, haha probably why they don’t shop with me anymore.
*I’ve been recycling my lunch containers that I get salad in and every recyclable plastic I use. - And I’m eating less meat and more vegetables.
I’m trying to do more but sometimes it’s really difficult being at school.
This is something I’ve always been big on and lately it seems it may be becoming easier and easier to do. I’m big on recycling and saving on energy, but I want to become better at this with a lot more of my practices.
I have taken baby steps on this one. I’m currently trying to purchase only organic fruits and vegetables, which is difficult when you live in a place without farmer’s markets or co-ops. My next challenge is to start buying only biodegradeable cleaning supplies.
This city is great about making one want to be green. Recycling is a sinch, no one smokes, and everyone is always running or cycling or hiking… So after coming here, I quit smoking (which wasn’t that big of a deal since I had quit for 4 years and just recently started again) and I go walking in the evening around my neighborhood for at least 45 minutes. People around here are inspiring and they don’t even know it!! One of the biggest parts of moving all the way across the country is I only packed up my car and took with me what I could stuff in it. After moving into my new place, I’ve decided that I’m going for the simplistic motif. I’m investing in a bed, but no more furniture. No clutter. Nothing. Anything I do buy, I’m buying used. It’s quite easy to do this when you start out with very little like I have.
Hi! This is my very 1st “thing” to accomplish on this website. The great thing about this goal is it’s ongoing and will never end- There will always be ways in which i can “become more green”. First, a quick history…
In high school, i belonged to the “Recycling Club” & the “SEAC- Student Environmental Awareness Club”. Not the most glamourous of after-school activities, for we mainly collected recycled paper from classrooms and trash such as paperbags, bottles etc for recycling. I loved it, and felt like i was making my small little footprint on the world. I even made my own, homemade recycled paper in my friend Jessica’s garage!
After high school, I went to college and lost touch with my “green” ways. I was all about studying and things that were cheap (and that i could afford on a part-time salary), rather than things that were good for the environment.
Well it’s been 7 years since college, and i am still not as “green-friendly” as i want to be. However, over the last six months, i have taken steps in the right direction:
...i now use a Nalgene bottle for water at home, work, & yoga instead of styrofoam cups or other disposable goods…
...I use hard-plastic coffee mugs to transport and drink my coffee at work and on the weekends…
This is in no-way deserving of a big fat gold star, but it’s a step in the right direction. :)
I intend to make more changes in my life to make more of an impact on the environment. You know what a friend told me? She told me it takes 1000 years for a plastic grocery bag to decompose. That little fact is what has jump-started my mission!
Til next week,
