First day on site 6 months ago

and the playhouse is up – roof and doors and all. A long day. I got a little emotional over my own idle hands, but pushed through with a smile. Everyone did there best didn’t let the heat, the fried chicken, Vietnamese sandwiches, or brownies and lemonade slow us down. It looks amazing in its natural habitat! And were able to take Sunday off.

Big Progress 6 months ago

The playhouse is up and standing in its temporary home. Just in time to show off for happy hour friday. Which means we can take the weekend off. Passed the first kid test with flying colors. Needs some fine tuning, but now that the roof structure is up it feels like a real building. The fence is coming along and we should be onsite late next week.

Learned to mig weld! 7 months ago

A simple horizontal stitch was not as hard as I thought. But I need lots of practice.

Inaugural day in the metal shop 7 months ago

Lots of new tools. Learned to the cold saw to miter our panel frames from 2×2 angle steel, the drill press on a stack of flitch plates, and the funnest of all – the hand held grinder to remove mill scale before welding. Will be picking up the torch soon…! My hands feel accomplished and my mind a little freer today.

Getting to know the shop 7 months ago

Built a little window screen for my kitchen from half a sheet of plywood and a few 2×2s. I learned to use the skill saw, the band saw, and the jig saw. Very empowering. Still want to clean the rack up on the router, lathe the bars, and finish the wood before I install.

Its happening! 9 months ago

This is a big part of what I came here for. I am having so much fun with large scale models, but next quarter I’m planning on my first design/build studio. Spring time working outdoors, what could be better. I’ll get comfortable with some new tools and even learn to weld!!! Its practically all I can think about. Oh boy, oh boy.
