On its behalf, Memphis has great music & great food (not the healthiest, but probably some of the tastiest in the world). Also, I have a great group of close friends here & the cost of living is low compared to other parts of the US. Those are the best things I can say about this city.
Here’s the bad stuff… I moved here from Louisiana with my family when I was 12, and I felt a huge difference in the “air” of Memphis vs. Louisiana. The atmosphere of Louisiana was just happier. Even at age 12, I could feel some kind of gray cloud hanging over this place. I think a lot of the tension here has to do with race & Martin Luther King’s murder. It’s such a shame that a 1968 murder can cast such a dark & long-lasting hateful shadow on a place. The hate is what MLK was against, but it definitely persists & I hate that for people of all colors.
My family moved away when I was college age, so I stayed here. However, I feel that I’ve never belonged. I’m 30 now, so it’s not like 18 years isn’t enough time to give a place a shot at being home. I’ve finally finished up college & I’m having a really tough time finding a job in the area. Once I do find a job, I think it will only be to save up enough money to move.
My husband’s family is here & he doesn’t want to move, but I don’t know how much longer I can stay here. I feel like I’m wasting my life in this stifling place & I could be much happier somewhere else. Maybe somewhere more picturesque where I can get out in nature & exercise & people seem happier to be alive. I’m at a point in live where I’m ready to thrive vs. simply surviving.
I know that once I leave, there will be things that I miss that I didn’t realize I’d miss. But, it helps to know that I can always come back if I feel like I should.

If I could burn that city to the ground i would. It was the worst mistake I have ever made in my still very short life. I spent the first 5 years of my twenties there and I regret every second of it. If there are any memphis lovers reading this, this next statement is for you.
MOVE OUT OF THAT HORRIBLE PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you grew up there I feel very bad for you. BUT the rest of the country is NOT like memphis. You can escape. Just do it.
Thinking of that place makes me sick.
FUCK YOU MEMPHIS!!!!!!!! And FUCK every single worthless person that lives there. If I had the chance to burn that city to the ground I would and I would make sure you ignorant, racist, redneck, gangbanging, crack smokin, motherfuckers would be burned with it.
DONT MOVE TO THE WORST CITY IN AMERICA!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!!!!!

I have lived here for almost 6 years I moved here from Oregon and can’t wait to move home next year. Since being here I had my car broken into after 2 months then totaled my car 3 months later (because people can’t drive here) after being here and then had my apt broken into while I was at home in bed that was like 2 years ago. It is so unsafe here and ghetto. The black people here are much different then the northwest. I have to live an hour away just to feel safe. I know there is crime everywhere but here is ridiculous. People can’t drive, they are very rude and I hate this place more and more everyday.

Memphis Sucks
I’ve been living here for about 7 years now and it has not gotten better. I’m in 11th grade and only have one more year. After that I am joining the Coast Guard and never coming back. Everyday I ask myself why did we leave Virgina.

My husband and I have our jobs transferred, now we just need to make sure we have enough saved for our moving expenses. Memphis was a good place for both of us to be for a while, but we have outgrown this city and we need to move on.

I’ve been living in Memphis for about 4 mo. now, and I hate it! I have a friend and some aquaintences that I hang out with a few times a week. However, they are all these strange man boys. They care about neither working nor women. I’ve tried to extend myself to different people here and make new friends but to no avail. I feel like I’m in a very hostile environment here. Memphis doesn’t have enough redeeming qualities to warrant tolerating its crazy drivers and high crime rate. I need a way to ESCAPE!

Herakles is now living back in San Francisco!
I moved to Memphis from San Francisco (job). I thought “Hey, its laid back, the people are friendly (lie), and real estate is cheap (now I know why) I am moving back to SF just as soon as I can. People are norrow minded and hateful here and they don’t know how to drive!
