Call my aunt monthly

Via email. But still.

And I am happy that it’s gone so well. My aunt is a role model for me in a lot of ways and it’s very hard for me to look back on her absence in recent years without feeling something close to regret. I’m glad she is back in my life.

I’m going to call her today and let her know that I’ll be graduating in the spring. She’ll be tickled.

I haven’t talked with her since I visited! Eek! So today being mother’s day I am going to call her. Right now.

While visiting her these past few days we’ve done a lot of catching up. Turns out I haven’t been up to her house in over 5 years! It’s changed so much!

As she was driving me to the airport this afternoon she told me not to be a stranger, that it drives her crazy how my mother (who used to be one of her better friends) can never find the time to call her or talk. That was embarrassing to hear. Because I sometimes do that with my friends and am soooo aware of it. There’s really no reason for it either and when one of my friends says “Yeah I haven’t heard from you in awhile” I won’t even give excuses anymore. That was my first step towards making the commitment: letting go of the urge to make excuses for it.

So this is my renewal. I love my aunt, I want her to feel my love for her and know about her life and have her know more about mine.

I am going up to Maine to see her in a week!

This is a reminder to myself to call her on Valentine’s Day.

Anyone who reads this should consider reaching out to someone special that they don’t get to see often or who lives far away. No better day than Valentine’s to reconnect.
