I grew up in North Idaho. Three times a subtle flicker in the sky. I just looked up and the show was on. Maybe a good excuse to be outside more often at night.

How I did it: I went to school in upstate NY and one night the northern lights were dancing across the sky. They were green. It was freezing out, because a. it's freezing in NY during the winter, all day and night long and b. that's the only way you see the northern lights. Read how I did it…
How I did it: At a camping trip with my parents and my best friend, Nicole. She and I went down to the beach every night to look at the stars. One night while we were there we saw a bright orange streak across the sky. We didn't know what it was since there were no lights anywhere in sight. My dad showed up at the beach a few minutes later to ask if we saw the Northern Lights. He taught us a trick he learned while he was in Nunavut and whistled to make… Read how I did it…

How I did it: Well, I was up in the Arctic with the Canadian military on exercise. We stayed out in tents in -50 degrees Celsius weather and at some point walked out at night to use our 'bathroom' and there they were! Read how I did it…
How I did it: I used to live in Anchorage, I got to see them from my front porch in the evening. It was actually by accident, and it wasn't techincally spectacular. But with snow on the ground and seeing the dancing lights over the trees is something i'll never forget. Read how I did it…
How I did it: I lived in Alaska, but worked the morning shift at a local radio station. The aurora like to come out around 3 AM or so, at my prime sleeping time, so I missed them for a very long time. Eventually, I put all of my friends on Aurora watch and gave them instructions to call me any night that they were in full effect. Eventually, I got to see them on one extremely brisk March morning: drove out of town, four miles away from electricity, … Read how I did it…

Since my name is Aurora and people are constantly saying “oh like the Aurora borealis” whenever they learn my name, i would really like to see this. Plus i’ve heard it’s absolutely fabulous. i’ve received postcards featuring this but i’m sure it does not compare to the real thing.
drummerboy1970 feeling lost, lonely and scared at the moment...not too big to own it!
I’m an Englishman who lived over in the States for 10 years which meant that i flew back and forth across the pond on a fairly regular basis…On one such trip…it was a night flight…everyone on the plane was sleeping and i was trying to sleep but without much success…i had my head leaning against the window with my eyes closed…and when i opened them one time…there they were..the northern lights….they were beautiful…oscillating and pulsing…and mainly green if i remember correctly…what i do remember is thinking that it was such a shame that everyone was asleep whilst this was going on outside the window…so i buzzed the stewardess and when she came over i said…i’m not sure what you think but maybe it would be worth making a quick announcement that the northern lights are currently visible out of the left side of the plane…i was all eager and puppy-like and i swear i nearly stuck my tongue out and panted!!...anyway…she looked a me in a very non-plussed way…said…i don’t think so sir…and went and sat back down again….i was heartbroken…couldn’t understand…and felt very lonely watching those lights up there all on my own..

Researched when the new moon is each month from September – December. October is out because I am at a conference in Sacramento during the new moon. I am considering November because the new moon is the 16th, getting brighter until the first quarter moon on the 24th.
I was thinking if I went a couple of days towards the new moon …. what if I made it a Grand Holiday and had my Thanksgiving there? Being an orphan, that would be a really cool way to spend a holiday!
My best friend has lived in Kenai Alaska for a few years now. I cant wait to visit her and see the Northern Lights, among many other things. Im afraid I wont come back home! Oh well.
