Hello 43Thingers!
Since you have all been so supportive of me and my goals in the past, I figured I would reach out to you in search of help. I want to be an actuary very badly. I have passed the first exam and am going to take the next one this summer. I had a summer internship with a life insurance company in 2011, and I currently have an internship with a property and casualty insurance company in Chicago for the spring. However, I don’t have a full-time job lined up after I graduate this May. I desperately want to live in Chicago. So, if you know any actuaries in Chicago, let me know! Everyone says that most jobs are found through networking, and I currently don’t have any connections to insurance companies in Chicago (besides the one I am working at right now). If you can help me expand my network, I would greatly appreciate it! 16 months ago

I passed the first actuarial exam in September!!!!! I studied all summer for it – 150 hours – but it paid off in the end. 19 months ago

Well, it took a couple weeks to really become comfortable with my internship, but by the end of the summer I knew that this is what I want to do when I graduate. It is such a rewarding, challenging career field. I can’t wait to find a full-time position! 19 months ago

I have been at my internship for a week, and I really don’t enjoy it. It may be because I haven’t been trained properly. My manager just throws stuff at me and expects me to figure it out on my own. I have to learn a new computer program that is very frustrating. I hope that I will like actuarial work more when I actually understand what I am doing. I also think that part of the problem is my disinterest for annuities/investment. I think I would rather work in health or property and casualty insurance because I find those types of insurance more interesting and meaningful. 1 year ago
